Swollen lymph node in neck for over 6 weeks.

Hello,

At the beginning of March (I believe it was) I suffered severely with tonsilitis, I had pain in my ear and couldn’t eat or drink anything. Ive always suffered with tonsilitis ever since I was about 12-13. I am now 19. Since having that bout of tonsilitis I have noticed that I still have a swollen lymph node in my left side of my neck. When I first noticed it I went to the doctors (1 week after finding it)  and they told me that it’s just a lymph node and it would go down in 2 weeks. It didn’t go down so I went back and they said that it could take 4-6 weeks to go down. I recently went back to the doctors because it’s still the same size, if not the tiniest bit smaller and they ordered a blood test. They checked my full blood count, And tested me for glandular fever. The blood test all came back completely normal. My doctor said when he ordered the blood test that sometimes lymph nodes can take months to go back down. I’m still worried because it’s not hard but it’s also not soft. They won’t do scans because I guess they don’t think it’s necessary. I should probably also mention that a few years ago I was the same with another lump that I still have to this day in my back but my doctor said it was just a cyst (which it obviously is and it has also got smaller over the years). Is it possible that the blood test didn’t pick up something? Would people be satisfied and convinced that it’s not cancer or anything serious by the experience I have had with the doctors??

  • Hello Anonymous541,

I am sorry to hear these lymph nodes have given you so much worry. It is good the doctors have done the blood test and tested for glandular fever and it is good news the tests came back clear. If you are still worried or want to discuss whether a scan would be useful, perhaps you should consider getting a second opinion. You can find out more about this here.

I hope you get the reassurance you need soon.

    Best wishes,
