Post menopause bleeding

I have not had periods for more than 10 years, I am 60. Smears always ok. I had bleeding and GP referred me to the 2 week max wait post menopause hospital clinic. They did internal ultrasound and took womb samples. They said at the apppontment that I had a thickened area of endometrium and were testing the samples for that.

They checked my phone number and said I may be rung to talk over the results. I have had a letter today 4/9 with an appointment to see gynae on 16th so that is a 2 week wait. I am worried now. I know its just to wait, but I feel from the tone of the appointmnet that if it was all-clear I would have been rung. I have not had missed calls. Thank you for reading.

  • Hi Sheerer1

Thank you for your post, that does seem similar to my journey. I dont take HRT. Stopped periods and no symptoms at all, HRT is not offered as family history of BC. But I did have a bleed a few years back and just a vaginal ultrasound and they said I was ok. That sort of worries me in the back of my mind, I hope nothing was missed then, if you get my meaning. I will read up on nhs and cancer uk sites and get myself knowledgeable on all this. It is the waiting between tests. The one they did of the lining did take some weeks to come back I recal them saying that. I will take my notebook next appointment haha. All the best waiting and heres hoping we are ok. I do work in school, is it on my post?  Hugs to you x

  • I had a similar referral beginning of last month for 2WW for pmb, so far I have only had basic ultrasound where radiographer found lots and said further diagnostics needed, but they had no specialist appointments yet so I am still waiting.  The waiting is hard. And I haven’t had any blood tests, biopsies, or the extra diagnostics yet or even talked to anyone about my symptoms.  Results seemed to be sent to GP, why I don’t know, as he couldn’t really comment on them as he isn’t the specialist, but I at least got a copy of the results to familiarise myself ready. I had to wait a few weeks for the GP appointment to get them as reception would not give them out, but you could ask if they have them.

  • Gosh DaisyW that seems a long wait. I had my tests done in one appointment at clinic. In the room at the time was the Specialist Nurse and a nurse as well as the gynaecoloogist. It seemed very thourough to me. I rang today and the specialist wants to see me and has what she called 'oer-booked' his clinic so I will be seen in the next 2 weeks. So 4 weeks in total waiting from GP to results, and possibly other tests.

I hope you get sorted soon, and get some answers.

  • I think it may just be the area I am in, they just say my times are 'in breach' of the target as if its just statistics!

I read that most PMB referrals weren't malignant in origin, so wasn't too worried before the ultrasound.  As they don't seem to have found lots of extras at your appointment they may just want to discuss it or have some treatment that may help, so I hope it all goes well for you, its just so disconcerting waiting with imagination running riot X

  • I hear you!

I made the same journey in 2013, and totally agree that the most difficult period is 'awaiting results'.  The sequencing for me was:

Referral to PMB clinic (3 weeks- i got lost in the system).  Appointment same as yours 29 Jan

Day Surgery, some kind of samples taken for biopsy. 31 Jan (offerred a cancellation)

Test Results- 10 days later. 10 Feb.  Endometrial cancer diagnosis, stage 1B

MRI Scan 12 Feb (was offered a cancellation appointment)

    Hysterectomy 4 March

Radiotherapy. 19 May for one week.

One thing that might help: at each stage I pointedly said to everyone that i was happy to accept a cancellation and could come at VERY short notice.  This shortened the time scale hugely.  The delay I couldn't overcome was waiting for the multidisciplinary team to meet.  Apparently they had to decide whether Gynacology or Gynacological Oncology would be dealing with me!  That ate up two more weeks.

As for test results, I had a phone call from the hospital at 10am, asking me to come in for a consultation at 1PM- to be told that I had cancer.  in my experience a quick response from the NHS is not always to relay good news.  Hang in there.  You can do this.

  • Thank you Swansea Sue,  it is such a comfort to hear that although it is all a rollercoaster, it can all work out ok even if the diagnosis is not exactly what we wished for. People  are going through so much and we don't really see it properly until it happens to us.

  • Hi

After having a routine CT in june as I have had bowel cancer, it was noted that I had thickening of the womb lining. 18 months without periods due to menopause. Had ultrasound and was told it just looked like I was due a period but it had to be investigated. Was refered to gyni through 2 week wait where they took biopsies and blood. I was told I would be getting results in 2 weeks at an appointment but a week after they rang me to go in the next morning!!! so you can guess the state I was in, I said to the nurse who rang... so it's bad news then... and she said no not neccessarily I asked her if my results were back and she said she couldn't discuss that over the phone this made me more worried. I was in a right mess going for the appointment only to be told the biopsies were ok and I had to go to sleep for a hysteroscopy. I had this done and another biopsy. I go for the results next week but at a Drs appointment this week she told me she's had the report back and everything looks normal. It's taken 2 months of worry. O and I had a random 10 day period after the ultrasound so maybe that explained the thickening. The Dr said it happens to some women, the ovaries kick up again and produce the odd period.

Hope everything turns out good for you.

  • Thank you for that Ineedabreak, it is useful to know how these things pan out. I had the hysteroscopy with a local anaesthetic and now going back to gynae clinic on 16th so waiting and worrying (and sometimes foregtting about it all for a few hours which is nice) Thank you and all the best to you
