HPV AND ABNORMALITY

hi,

I am looking for some comfort and reasuranace. I am a mother of two who last June had a HPV smear result. I was told another smear was due a year later (June 2019) which I have been to and it is now reading ( your smear has shown an abnormal result ) I am booked in to have a colposcopy next Friday 11th. Now I am thinking the worst that my HPV has turned into cancer. I am aware it takes 10-15 years for abnormal cells to turn into anything nasty but because of he HPV virus I am very very worried that something nasty has happened. I’ve been religious with my smears from age 25 never missed one.

Please someobody help a scared mummy out.  I’m making myself so unwell with worry.

Thank you

  • Hi Christie

Please take a deep breath and try to calm yourself. HPV doesn’t turn into cancer. It can cause abnormal cell changes which could, if left untreated, eventually turn cancerous. But this is not always the case by any means. Many, many women will have an abnormal result, have it treated and will never get to the stage of having cancer.

The hpv virus is extremely common amongst the population, and if you have abnormal cell changes it’s more than likely you carry the hpv virus. The body can clear the virus, but sometimes the immune system doesn’t and it is active and can cause these cell changes.

You’ve had regular smears, and if you have an abnormal result at this point it’s likely that these can be easily treated. The standard next step is the colposcopy where your cervix can be examined more closely to identify any areas of abnormality. This will determine what treatment is required, but it should be very straightforward to get rid of any areas of abnormality.

Please try not to worry too much if you can...abnormal cells are not cancer. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask, and let us know how you get on. xx

  • I can’t tell you how much this has helped.

Thank you so much for putting things into perspective for me and making it clear what’s what.

    Kind regards

    Christie xx

  • Thank you Christie..glad I was able to help a little. Sometimes our panic runs away with us and we automatically go to worst case scenario. I read on here once someone saying something like “don’t worry till you have something to worry about” and it’s actually good advice.

It’s not long till your colposcopy, and hopefully everything will be sorted out for you quickly after that. xx

  • Hi there.

So I went for my colposcopy and it showed the lowest grade of a pre-cancerous cell. The tiniest little pimple. I’ve been reasured by my by my consultant that it’s nothing to worry about and there is a probability it will clear on it own. I have to go back in a years time for a check up. So I have been making myself worry unnecessarily. Thank you for easing the worry before hand.

    Kind regards Christie

  • Hi Christie

That’s great news-I’m so pleased for you! It’s very likely this will clear up and that will be that. I know you were so worried, but this will be a huge cloud lifted from you. Thank you for coming back to let us know your good news. Now, just go and enjoy life! xx

  • Have got infection HPV because I am asking because my partner got infection in cervix of HPV.

  • I have low grade precancerous cell and the HPV virus. The HPV virus is a infection on your cervix.
