Iron Deficiency Anaemia - Freaking out!

Hi everyone,

I’ve had a low level pain in my lower right abdomen for a few weeks, so went to the docs thinking it was a grumbling appendix. Blood tests showed severe anaemia that lead me to have a blood transfusion. I’ve got an ultrasound booked in and consultation in the gastro clinic, but my searching on the internet for answers (I know, I know...) is freaking me out, and I can’t stop myself!!

I had no symptoms typical of anaemia, have felt pretty normal apart from low level pain in abdo. No bleeding when I go to toilet, no constipation but diarrhoea in the past few days. Past few days have also had stomach cramps and sickness. I’m so worried it’s cancer, but keep telling myself I’d have more symptoms. Would I?!

Really scared. Mum of 2 young kids and can’t contemplate what that route would look like...

Also, I think I’m going to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy -any advice on how to prepare would be much appreciated.

Thanks for reading xxx

  • Hello OhCrumbs,

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much about what it might be and yes you guessed well, searching on the internet for answers will sadly never give you answers, only more questions! We've all done it don't worry but it never ever reassures anyone and will only make you worry more.

If you have experienced any new symptoms in the last few days like the stomach cramps and sickness you describe that you haven't mentioned to the doctor previously, the best thing to do is to go back to your doctor and explain that you have been experiencing these. They will be in the best position to advise you and tell you whether they think an endoscopy or a colonoscopy would be required. We have information on our website on the endoscopy which you can find here and you can also find out more about the colonoscopy on this page.

I hope everything goes well for you for your ultrasound and consultation and that you get some definite answers soon.

    Best wishes,
