Terrified I have oral cancer

I’ve had a sore patch on the roof of my mouth for about 4 weeks now. I’ve been to the dentist twice and been told it looked like it had been caused by trauma and not sinister. I know the mouth heals quickly and anything that doesn’t heal in 3 weeks needs investigation so I’m going back to the dentist later this week.

I have health anxiety and am so worried it might be cancer. I’m trying to be strong and not think about it but the fear has taken over and I’m finding it hard to function and go to work. I feel pathetic posting here when there are such brave people with far bigger problems. I just wanted to talk to somebody and try and stay sane whilst I’m waiting to see someone. I live alone and feel very isolated. Thank you for reading.

  • Hi Lucy,

I'm sorry to hear that you've had this ongoing problem in your mouth. You've done the right thing by seeking an opinion from your dentist.

We know that dealing with health concerns and waiting for appointments can be a very stressful time. I don't know if you've dicussed your health anxiety and ways to manage it with your GP at all. If it's impacting on your daily life to the extent you describe in your post then it would be a good idea to seek some support with managing it. You might also like to check out these web links here and here about managing anxiety.

I hope that your appointment this week goes well and that the Dentist is able to offer you some further reassurance.

    Best wishes,
