Dreading colonoscopy as I've had a hysterectomy

I'm due to have a colonoscopy shortly as I had abnormal cells. The screening nurse told ne it might have more risks because I had a hysterectomy. I have been reading about this and it seems its more complex and painful due to adhesions. Has anyone any experience of colonoscopy after hysterectomy? I don't need terrible horror stories and only experiences of people who had previous abdominal surgery or hysterectomies please. I'm quite worried.

  • Since this procedure I have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease which appears to be the cruix of other ailments. Cancer, mild heart attack, lactose intolerance, dermatitus herpetiformis, spleen insufficiency. luckily the blood test picked the Coeliac up and although it's changed my life it's also allowed me to adapt to do other things.. had to stop running but now ride a motorbike for example .. it's just about adapting

  • So sorry you felt the same pains .. I still remember that pain even now .. it didn't cause me any further complications and eventually it assisted in finding other things .. hope this will help calm your fears a little

  • I have had an abdominal hysterectomy and then colonoscopy for pain and bowel changes. The worst bit was the bowel prep my latest colonoscopy was a ct scan with an injection that makes you feel as if you have peed yourself, My gap said most are done that way now. The result was two ovarian cysts that took 4 1/2 hours to remove due to extensive adhesions from previous surgery.
    l hope yours goes well

  • may I ask if the CT scan you had also entailed insertion of a small tube in your Rectum to insert air/co2 to inflate your colon I think they call it a Virtual Colonoscopy/Ct scan .... I am just wondering as I am pondering whether to opt for this myself as like others had previous hysterectomy and also had to abort  the colonoscopy:)! I would be extremely interested to find out your experience and others of that particular Virtual Scan !
For information I have had the other CT scan and honestly there was absolutely painless just a little weird feeling down below but that's all so if anyone is having that I would not worry at all!

  • Hi I did have a small tube in my rectum, no pain just uncomfortable probably due to the extensive adhesions, l have had a C section as well as hysterectomy,   I would prefer a colonoscopy this way if l needed anything else.
My doctor said that locally most colonoscopies are now CT scans. I have previously had the normal scan and they have had trouble getting around the upper bowel. I would prefer a ct scan.

Thanks so very much for your prompt reply and reassurance... It is not just the tube going in, it's combination with the amount of air on this one that is concerning me lol! I just don't want to go through all the prep again and still end up having to halt it and be no further along:)! Thanks for sharing your experience with me and allowing me to air my concerns anyway:)!

I appreciate your kind consideration and understanding:)!

  • I do hope it all goes well this time the prep is not easy.

  • I have no point been advised that having previously had an hysterectomy it could cause more discomfort!

I had two sigmoidoscopies a few years ago the second one I found unbearable.

Today I had a virtual colonoscopy (I refused to have another sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy unless they put me out!  I even found this really uncomfortable but not as bad as the sigmoidoscopy.

why dot the medical staff advise people of this, I couldn’t understand why I was uncomfortable I do now!!
