Breast screening and follow-up biopsies

Hi there,

I had my first routine mammagram in July and got called back for further screening. They had spotted two areas of calcification and I had to have 3 biopsies. One of these was normal, and the other two showed Atypical Hyperplasia. The consultant has asked me to come back for a further biopsy on the same left breast in another area to check for AH. I am a bit concerned about the numbers of biopsies, and when I raised this him, he was really rude and dismissive as if to say why are you asking me questions - just take what I say. He wouldn't even explain what the next steps might be - he just said he is making no assumptions and will await the results!

Had anyone else had experience of multiple biopsies? I have will have had 4 on 3 separate occasions, and visited the clinic 6 times in 6 weeks. Is this normal? I just feel fed up, nervous and worried about this whole process.

Thanks!

  • Hi SykeB,

I too was  recalled for further tests after calcifications were found on my routine mammogram. I had five biopsy samples taken in the one appointment. I’m awaiting the results. I guess you have been unlucky because all the staff I have come in to contact with have been really helpful and willing to answer my questions. Can you give one of the clinical nurse specialists a call, or maybe talk to one of the nurses on this forum. They may be able to offer some advice. Hope all goes well at your next appointment.

  • HI SykeB

I've just been called today for another biopsy and a stereotactic biopsy and I'm in bits...mainly becuase I thought I'd be having the definitive results now and yet I find myself back at square one. The waiting is the worst...for mine the result was inadequate so they want to do further tests.  I do wish you well and I'm sure they are doing what they need to do to ensure they have all the facts..and its best to be safe than sorry but for me the waiting is the absolute worst as its all out of our hands. Good luck!
