Worried about thyroid diagnosis taking so long

Good morning to you all,

This is my first post, in a desperate bid for some reassurance.

I first went to my GP early June in the hope of getting some thyroid function tests done as I was constantly cold and suffering with constipation, sudden weight gain (I am a very active and health consious gym addict), fatigue and brain fog. During my appointment the Doc spotted a lump on the left of my kneck which somehow I had failed to spot, despite the fact that it is quite obvious to the naked eye now that I know its there.

My initial bloods came back normal and an ultrasound recommended a FNA. After 3 weeks of waiting for the results as my Doctors managed to misplace them, the results were inconclusive - too heavily bloodtained and insufiicient cells. My GP reffered to me to an endo consultant who I have seen this week. He is now sending me for a hot /cold iodine scan after my latest bloods tested positive for antibodies. He says we may do another biopsy depending on the results and has booked another consult in 3 months to discuss the results. Having researched the hot/cold procedure I am feeling so frustrated. I know that he is suspecting Hashimotos disease but still needs to rule out anything more sinister. Everything I have read suggests that a biospy is the only this that can distinguish between benign and malignent cells and that all other tests only suggest a liklihood. To me, this begs the question, why am I being sent for this hot/cold test which cant tell me if the nodule is cancerous and delaying a repeat FNA that can. At this point that is all I am desperate to know. By the time i get my second consult this thing has been in my neck for 5 months that I know of and there seems to be no urgency whatsoever to rule out cancer.

Is this a typical experience for people or am I being fobbed off. Part of me feels I should feel reassured by the lack of urgency but I just cant deal with the anxiety of not knowing.

I would be so grateful for your thoughts and experiences.

  • Hi Chilts79,

I can understand why you are feeling so worried at the moment it has been such a frustrating time for you waiting for results  and I hope you get some definite answers soon. I am not sure myself why you have been sent for this particular test - your medical team will probably best placed to explain this to you so it might be worth bringing it up when you can.

I hope you will hear from others here who have had the same experience and that they will be along shortly to share it with you.

Hoping everything goes well for you and that you get to the bottom of this very soon.

    Best wishes,
