My experience of dermoid cysts

I just wanted to post my very recent experience of having two large dermoid cysts removed just to put people's minds at ease as I Googled until I found worst case scenario and was convinced I was either dying of cancer or going to have early menopause.

I am 30 years old without children and was first diagnosed as having a 5cm dermoid cyst on each ovary a few years ago but they were deemed too small to warrant an operation because I wanted children at some point and were forgotten about, having completely forgotten about them, I recently went to the doctors with pressure on my bladder especially around ovulation and was sent for an ultrasound which showed the cysts had grown significantly to 9cm and 10cm on each side. Despite wanting children and the rare risks involved e.g. infertility/early menopause, the risk of torsion/rupture along with the discomfort was too much for me so i opted to have them both removed. This has been done by open surgery due to their size and I am currently recovering fine, albeit sore! The surgeon managed to save about 10% of one ovary as more than expected was removed due to historic scarring and the other is completely fine. The reassuring thing is that even with a tiny bit of ovary left, hormones are still produced and early menopause can be prevented, it is super important to raise your initial concerns with the surgeon so they know to save tissue where possible. I also had the ovarian cancer protein screening through a blood test in advance so that he knew there were no issues there and wouldn't have to do a full removal if he saw anything unusual.

I totally understand what you are going through right now, I researched and thought the worst and was really worried about my future but surgeons can genuinely work miracles with the technology and knowlege they have access to, they would also have done the procedure by keyhole if it hadn't have been for their size and on both sides which is very rare.

I'm glad I pushed for this to be resolved ASAP as I can now move on with my life and look forward to my future, I hope you find the same quick resolution.

Good luck ladies and stay strong!!xx

  • Thank you so much Natural_Panicker for sharing your inspirational story and experience with us. I am sure it will be really reassuring to many who are about to have the same procedure to hear that you are doing so well and are recovering from your surgery. Great news too that early menopause could be prevented. Your advice will be so valuable to many who are about to embark on the same journey.

Wishing you a full speedy recovery and that you are soon no longer sore. And you can indeed now look forward to a bright future without these uncomfortable cysts!

  • Hi, I know this is a bit of a Late reply, but been googling the internet for answers, know you shouldn't do, I'm due to have mine removed next thursday, after months of constant pain, where I cant even sit down now, mines grown to 9cm on my last scan which was 4 months ago, so having it removed is an absolute relief, I'm due to have my ovary removed aswell as it's been damaged so much, reading your experience has actually put my mind at rest, as no where or anything seems to give a proper answer.

    Best Wishes

  • If you have any questions please just let me know, I was actually saying to my husband this weekend how my experience has made me so much less scared of operations as the benefits are so worth it! I didn't realise how much discomfort I'd tolerated for so long until they were gone.

It is a routine procedure for the surgeons and even more so if they are planning to remove the ovary along with it, they had the added complication of trying to save mine and operating on both sides so it took much longer than usual.

Try to relax and look forward to it all being over and you being pain free!xx

  • Folks I may be replying to old post but went in this week to have dermoid cyst 6cm removed on right ovary cane round to discover both ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed! Waiting on results of cyst! Very frightened! My thinking is that gyne seen something and removed all in preparation! Had Timor marker test two weeks before which wAs normal so did not expect anything other than routine! Initially scan also showed free fluid behind ovary without cyst!

  • Thanks for sharing your story, I know I'm a bit late on this post it's just I've been searching for info as I'm due to have mine removed in 2 weeks. I have a dermiod cyst around 6.5cm on my right ovary. The pain started in October usually just around my cycle but since Christmas night I have been getting sharp pains, bloated dragging feelings everyday. I got bloods done and they came back saying my CA125 markers were slightly elavated so got fast tracked for a ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound. Luckily with lockdown and working from home I can rest up. As I feel when I'm pain if I attempt to do anything remotely strenuous it might burst - did anyone else feel like that? I was a bit nervous as I've never been in hospital for an op since a bad experience in my childhood and reading your story has put me at ease. As there doesn't seem to be a lot of info of people who have experienced it, just graphic YouTube videos lol (which I did watch). I feel stupid that this cyst has somewhat incapacitated me, as people keep saying to me - oh I've got this cyst here there and everywhere and I'm fine etc.

Thanks for taking time to share x

  • I didn't have pain as such (though my tolerance is incredibly high) but i do recall the specialist saying ruptures are rare when I was anxious about it, mine were really big as well, it seemed ridiculous that a tiny ovary could support something like that. Just try and relax for the next couple of weeks, its important to listen to your body if you feel pain. When the pain is not there, I'd recommend walking regularly and eating really well before the op as being fit and healthy makes a huge difference to recovery. I hope you aren't too worried about it but if you are try and distract yourself, I did jigsaws, time flew by!xx

  • Hi [@Natural_Panicker]‍

I can see that your first post was a while ago so apologies for the delayed response but I was wondering if you could share your experience with some ongoing experiences that I'm having with my dermoid cyst.

Over 4 years ago, I was experiencing really bad pain during intercourse so naturally I went to the doctors and was referred to hospital for a scan where they found I had a dermoid cyst on my ovary.  At the time it was not even 1cm big.  2 years after the pain was still occuring but this time it would be when I sat down, or just doing general day to day activities (because this was ongoing it was more of a discomfort than a pain).  They offered for me to have a laporoscopy to investigate if anything else was cauing this pain/discomfort because it was 'so small it shouldn't be causing you this pain'.  Anyway, I had the laporoscopy and nothing else was apparent as to what this discomfort is (other than the cyst).

I went to the doctors yesterday because the pain is now intensifying and I seem to be experience other sort of problems.  For example, I have regular constipation (and this current run has been lasting for nearly 2 months now).  I have googled if a dermoid cyst can cause this and apparently when the cyst grows it can cause constipation.  When I mentioned this to the doctors, they said that it can't be the cyst as it is still too small (currently sitting at 2.5cm now) but they don't seem to want to find out what else could be causing me this.  It's really frustrating because I suffer terribly with bloating which to me seems all related to this cyst.  I know that it is of a small size but what if I am just sensitive to pain?

Did you have any other sort of symptoms which related to your cyst?  Is my body just being hella dramatic for no reason?  If you could share any sort of similar experience that you had that would be great!  I just want to reassure myself if anyone has gone through something similar!  Thanks in advance. x

  • Hey, I found out 1 year ago that I had a dermoid cyst on my left ovary around 6.5cm. When I found out it was there I was having big episodes of spontaneous, sharp pains that made it hard to move. The doctors disclosed a lot of information because I was freaking out. But the only symptoms I could then assign to the cyst were: pain during sex, bloatedness, constipation and lower stomach pains ( mild-severe ).

My doctors haven't been able to operate since they found it because of covid and it not being top priority. Which is understandable but it doesn't make it less scary. If you are experiencing any pains or discomforts never be afraid to call your gynaecologist, as that's what they are there for. Sometimes you need to ask to help put your mind at ease. I hope you get the answers you are looking for and hopefully get that cyst gone.

  • Hi [@Ginge28]‍

I have just been skimming through some things about dermoid cysts as I've recently found out I have a 8cm dermoid cyst on my right ovary and I just wanted to share my take on it.

All of these symptoms you have described are exactly what I've been experiencing. I've had pain during intercourse for years but only in December 2020 I knew something wasn't right as I had president bloating that wouldn't go away no matter what I tried. I called the doctors and they arranged for me to get a scan after describing my symptoms and the cyst was found but I was told it was an endometrioma originally.

After this things began getting worse, I was getting severe pain in my back and really bad constipation sometimes not being able to go at all which has led to me having a reoccurring hemhorrhoid (nightmare). I felt sick a lot and had really bad pain during all the time and mainly during my time of the month. I spoke to the doctor and these things are common and everyone will experience different symptoms and different levels of pain. I like you felt my body was being over dramatic!

I was then admitted to hospital in mid February as I was in severe pain to the point I was vomiting for hours I didn't know if it was my cyst or not but I knew something wasn't right. I got a CT scan and turned out I had a kidney stone and a really bad urine infection. So I was then surprised to find out they came to inform me on the cyst which I knew about and said it was a dermoid cyst! I was so shocked as I had been told it was a endometrioma several times.

I've now had a chat with the gynaecologist and he put my surgery down as urgent for removal and I'll be getting that in the next few months. I just want to say they are all very common and don't worry yourself! I have stressed a lot and I wish I haven't because it's added to my everyday health. The thing with a dermoid cyst is they do grow and the only way of getting rid of it is by it being surgically removed. If the cyst is affecting your everyday life then you should push to have this took further. I believe it shouldn't need to be left until the cyst gets to a larger size until it is removed!

my cyst is 8cm and for that reason I need to get open surgery to try and keep some of the right ovary. I'm only 23 I want to have kids so it's massively important to me. I just think you should chase things up and if you feel pain all the time you shouldn't have to suffer!

Things I do to help myself with the pain is use heat pads a lot and a hot water bottle. I also use ibprofen gel on my back etc which helps with temporary relief. If you are experiencing constipation syrup of figs or senokot helps or the doctor can prescribed laxido which is stool softener which is important to prevent hemorrhoids.

sorry that's a long message but I hope that helps! Xx
