Hysteroscopy

I've just been to my local hospital, saw lovely Dr and staff and she said "let's have a look and I'll take a biopsy".  Oh my good God the flippin pain! I screamed.  Twice.  She did attempt at getting the biopsy but said she is sending me to another hospital for a GA to have the hysteroscopy and biopsy and also LOOP excision of cervix.

Has anyone else had this done? Did you feel terrible pain? She said 90% of patients just feel a pinch but then the others (like me) hit the blinking roof! I kept apologising. I am just so relieved it's over.

So now I have a pre-assessment at my local hospital on Wednesday next week and all day appointment on the Friday.  With a GA can I drive home afterwards or not allowed? I don't want to burden my parents with the worry of all this so will have to get taxis.

  • I had an anesthetic put in before biopsy did they try this with you I felt a little sting but nothing what your describing until it wore off I’m 7 days after the biopsy and am in so much pain ended up back at my doctors today and on a strong course of antibiotics to make sure there isn’t an infection it’s a horrible experience

  • I hope you feel better very soon. No, I wasn’t given anything - “just relax”... yeah right!  How long will it be until you get your results? I wouldn’t have that procedure done again without GA for a million quid! Good luck with everything x

  • I had an hysterioscooy and biopsy taken last year. I like you suffered terrible pain and was crying all the way through. The worst was when they tried to get past the cervix into the womb, so at this point they gave me a local anaesthetic which to be honest didn’t make much difference. By the time they’d finished I was shaking, I was not offered a GA but they just carried on until the biopsy was taken. After the procedure the doctor wanted to tell me what he’d found. I was so much in shock mode that I didn’t take much in and just remember the words slightly suspicious. I worried until I got the results. However once over I didn’t experience any further pain, thank goodness.

i hope you have a better time with the GA. As for driving etc I imagine they’ll talk you through what will happen on the day and afterwards at your pre-op.

  • Hi Sundial, thanks for your reply. My goodness it’s awful isn’t it? How did it all turn out for you? Could they say what caused the pain? Hope all is well with you now x

  • Hi Rammsteinqueen

No the pain was never explained although I suspect it was because my cervix and womb were tilted back. I always had problems with smear tests. When the biopsy results came back I was diagnosed with womb cancer, grade 1, stage 1b. I had a total hysterectomy and tubes and ovaries removed in May 2018 via keyhole surgery. After radiotherapy I was given the all clear in October and now have regular check ups. However nothing I’ve been through since the hysteroscooy matched that pain!

  • Did you have painful smear tests? I had to have three due to two being inconclusive.  One of those smears was incredibly painful yet I never used to have this problem.  It is so worrying not know what it wrong.. I'm sorry to hear you got diagnosed and had to go through all of that.  Such great news you are now all clear x

I keep thinking back to yesterday and me laying there screaming and "NO!! STOP!!!" dear me.. I wouldn't have that done again for a million pounds! I only hope I pass my pre-op assessment or heaven knows what I will do.  I'm so worried.

  • I’m in the same boat waiting on my results from biopsy and I’m up the wall with worry can’t sleep feel nauseous and literally can’t focus on anything it’s scary

  • Hi

I had the hysteroscopy & biopsy under GA 2 weeks ago.

Also before that at my first hospital appointment, they took 3 biopsies! I totally agree, the pain! was like being in labour! I was digging my nails in the bed.

The 3 of them came back ok but just to be sure they did the rest, I was thinking my god, why didn't they just do all the biopsies while I was asleep. Or at least give me some gas & air.

I had a thought though and asked for an up to date smear while I was asleep which they did, save the pain of going in another year.

I was very tired after the anaesthetic. Painful when I first woke up too but they quickly gave me pain relief.

Good luck, these things need doing though so we just have to let them get on with it.

  • Oh it's terrible isn't it the waiting? I am Googling and worrying like something.  When my boyfriend sees me on my iPad he says "I hope you're not reading about cancer and death again!".  I cannot help it. I am a Pisces - it's how we're made up.

Good luck with everything, I hope everything is good news for you x

  • Ooh can I ask though, the pain when you woke up it wasn't like the pain when having the procedure was it? I sit here dreading I will get that pain.  I do get some very sharp almost electrical pelvic pain but not very often at all. I am absolutely dreading the procedure but would much sooner get it all out of the way. I may have to have laparoscopy as well.

How long did you feel a bit groggy for afterwards?

I hope your results come back clear, take care x
