Gallbladder Polyp found worried as hell

Hi all,

Ive previous posted about stomach problems. long story short, blood test fine and stool sample test was fine. Final stage of my worry was ultrasound.

Had an ultrasound on friday just gone and the technican asked me if i felt a buldge, from there i knew something wasnt right.

Come today, got a call from my GP they told me results were back and GP wanted a routine discussion with me, sent me to paniac, Lucky was able to see them this evening and the GP told me they found a small Polyp on my gallbadder, think he said either 2mm or 2.5mm.

Referal to specalist to see if monitoring or removal or Gallbladder, he did say they are common and I shouldnt worry, referal to the specalist was to do right for me. I have gone on DR google - i know, I shouldnt, although everything i read sounds very reassuring, e.g, size indicates if it is cancerous or not, i can not help but worry.

I have only told my sister, I can bare to worry my parents.

Just wondering if any one else got simiar experience they can share. This last couple of months has been very hard for me and I feel i have coped with it and bottled it all in, only a select few know. But i have been a bit teary at times being worried sick.

I dont want to offend anyone else who have more pressing concerns from their experiences, I am just very worried.

  • Hi baziy2k,

I can understand that the series of tests have made you nervous, but it's good to hear that they have come back clear so far and that your GP has said you shouldn't worry. It's important to keep this in mind if you find yourself in a panic. You can read more about referals here, but patients aren't diagnosed with cancer in 9 out of 10 referral cases.

I hope this will reassure you,

  • Hi, I've been with my 11 year old daughter today for a scan as she's suffering from stomach pains, feeling sick dizzy etc...They found 2 gall bladder polyps, one 4mm, another smaller. But said if they get to 10mm they would need to be removed. I'm terrified. I've read if they get to 10mm they are likely to be cancerous. We've obviously found these early as she's so young, so if she was older, I'm assuming they'd be bigger. Panic setting in since I've got hone from hospital!  Any advice? Thanks

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear about your daughter. I was too shocked at first and done non stop google searches and believe me, always makes it worst. I know you can not help it.

I did get sent to see a specialist, he told me, although polyps on gallbladder are rare. Polyps themselves are very common like moles.

Most gallbladder Polyps are normally discovered accidentially as well, so chances are a lot more people have them, but they just never had a scan to discover them.

Specilist will recommend follow scan, 6 to 12 months to see if it grows, if it doesnt then frquency of scan will reduce as well.

Hope my own experience has help you ease you mind.

  • Back in 2018 I had a few things going on and started to feel tired and nauseous. I had a lot of pain in my abdomen. After repeatedly going to the gp over the space of 6 months they finally sent me for a ultrasound scan where a gallbladder polyp was found, size 4mm. I had this scan repeated 12 months later which it had grown another 2mm. Any growth that is 2mm in a year is classed as ok.

Covid happened and I didn't get the scan done in late 2020. It came to Feb 2021 and I started having severe pain and feeling more nauseous especially when I wake up. I was sent for an urgent scan which they had found the polyp had grown considerably and is now 11mm. This is now in the range for concern. The GP had not sent a referral in all this time to a specialist. It came to April when I was given excuses and the GP that I spoken to told me it needed to have been sent as urgent referral back in Feb 2021.

A few days after the referral was sent I had a call from the specialist and told I am on the urgent list to have my gallbladder out.

Try not to stress about it, a lot of people have these polyps and they usually behave if they don't as in my case, then it is dealt with. There is no point in worrying about something you can't change.

Anything over 10mm or growth of more than 2mm in a year then chase it up.

I will have the tissue check when my gallbladder is removed but I also know that percentage is on my side and in my favour, I'm a 36 year old female. Cross fingers all is well.

  • Hi, sorry I know I'm late to this, and also sorry to anyone really suffering my thoughts are with you all ️

I had a scan for stomach pain in 2018, they had found a polyp on my gallbladder, measuring at 2.4mm

I understand why they were not worried as it's size determines everything, but I do often suffer from a dull ache in my right side, nauseous every single morning. And I haven't had a check up. I have a telephone appointment next week with my gp and I am going to ask can this be checked because I can't help but worry. I'm 26 and constantly having problems withy stomach I feel I'm always in agony, I just wanted to ask can I request a scan or can they say no? Thanks so much and thoughts to you all x

  • Good morning, I've had my gallbladder removed now to check my polyp that was 12mm. Rate of growth was 6mm in a year. This polyp has been present and slow growing until recently. So signs were pointing to cancer. A biopsy on the polyp luckily was benign.

I was told it shouldn't have been causing me pain as it wasn't blocking any bile duct but it was, the pain was so severe at one point. It did ease off but was always a niggle.

After doing some research I found it can simply be cholecystitis which is inflammation.

Are they going to do regular scans? Mine were annually pre covid.

I know it's a constant worry, maybe explain how worried you are and they may do a scan to put your mind at rest.

From my experience anything over 10mm is removed or growth of more than 2mm per year.

Keep in mind age is on your side and they are used to dealing with these, so they know when ymto operate.

    Best wishes

  • Hey did removing it solve the problem. I have polyps and go through phases of nausea. I think it's related. Doctors not so much

  • Hey did having it removed work?

  • Hey found any solutions? I have on off nausea and it's horrible

  • Hi, yes the nausea resolved, the doctors didn't agree that this was a symptom caused by the polyp, as no bile ducts were blocked. They didn't understand the pain I was getting for the same reason.

Once removed and recovered all symptoms went. It was only for my symptoms that the quickly growing growth was picked up.
