Possible bowel cancer symptoms?

I'll try to keep this short.

First found a lump in my lower left abdomen which was egg shaped 1+ years ago. No longer than 3.the lump occasionally burns a little. I had a period of a lot of burning for a week and decided maybe this lump was something bad and not just my ovary.

The GP said it wasn't my ovary and prob just a fatty lump and because I've had the lump awhile I might be rejected for an ultrasound.

I managed to get an ultrasound but whilst waiting two months for this ultrasound my burning pain has increased and is now radiating into my hip and thigh. I also have had softer stools every day since and sometimes I have a bowel movement 3 times a day. I've had many appointments with GP whilst waiting for ultrasound.

I managed to get a FIT test the day of my ultrasound. So waiting for the FIT to come back now.

My ultrasound was great the radiologist was lovely. He talked me through everything and said he couldn't see anything wrong anywhere. He said where the lump is is my colon but he doesn't think I have anything wrong.

He said "if it is bothering me I can suggest a CT scan for you in my notes to your doctor".

Does this mean the ultrasound scan can see into the bowel to see any tumours and I haven't got any even though I have a hard lump?

I've had to call my doctor to arrange a telephone appointment to then request a CT. My GP never has available appointments and ive only managed to get a telephone one because I said I could have cancer.

I have had several blood tests and all are normal. I am currently breastfeeding my 7month old baby boy.

I cry every day. I want to see my children grow. I want to baby sit their children. I want to see the sun glisten on the ocean and the wind move the leaves. I can't die. I'm terrified.

The lump is sauge shaped

I have soft bowel movements

Burning sensation in hip and around the lump

No blood

Feel like I have something stuck slightly in my lower bowel

Im29

Have two children Aves 2 1/2 and 7 months

Family history of chrons but not on my blood line

I've had anemia before after child birth and once a slightly lower reading when I was 20

Ive always for years had cramping before bowel movements and sometimes urgecy to go

Anyone else having these symptoms?

  • Hello Charlibook182,

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with a health concern at the moment. It's understandable that you might feel worried but it sounds positive that so far all your blood tests were clear.

Ultrasound scans use high frequency sound waves to create a picture of a part of the body. The sound waves bounce off the organs inside your body and a microphone picks them up. The microphone links to a computer that turns the sound waves into a picture. They can show up changes, including abnormal growths. You mention that the sonographer felt there wasn't any cause for concern during your ultrasound which is positive sign.

I hope that your GP was able to give you some reassurance during your telephone appointment. If you've not yet spoken with your GP then it's worth chatting to them about the level of anxiety that this is causing for you. Hopefully they will be able to offer some additional support so that you can better manage this.

If you'd like to speak to one of our team of nurses about things then you could give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • I'm 41 and very similar to you especially with the hip pain. I have blood but not daily and a lot of mucous and stools that vary from hard to soft. I  have bloods this Friday to determine how fast I'll get a colonoscopy. I'm terrified I've ignored symptoms for years.

I hope you get some answers soon x

  • Let me know how you get on also! Good luck x

  • Hiya I'm wondering how you got on hope you're well xx

  • Hiya, how did you get on?

I've also got a change in bowel habits and pain in my right hip radiating down my leg. It's awful! I've been referred on the urgent 2ww for a colonoscopy but due to coronavirus I've been waiting a while and it is still unclear when this will go through. I really feel like I'm going mental at this point.

  • Hi Kitkit22

Sorry to hear you are in pain and been referred for a colonoscopy. I too am struggling and scared. I've suffered with piles on and off for two years so experience some rectal bleeding after going. Recently I've lost some weight and it's terrified me. The Drs have done blood tests and all came back ok in March apart from some slightly raised liver levels (bilirubin). They performed a lower abdomen scan to check ovaries, liver etc and all was fine. I'm now having repeat blood tests on Tuesday as they want to check nothing sinister as my piles are still playing up. I've had a change in bowel habits too and feel some tailbone pain (numb feeling in my bum) which I find unusual. I had an examination last week and they found an external pile and skin tag. The Dr mentioned he will probably refer me for a colonoscopy either way after these next blood tests and of course it's got me scared. Can I ask did they do blood tests for yourself when they referred you?

    Dear Charlie

Im so sorry you are feeling such anxiety and concern about all the symptoms  from this lump that you have found in your abdomen.

Im no expert  but i have had lots of bowel issues throughput my life im 63 now i was 18 when they first started. I I honestly think if your that worried you should ask your gp to organise  for you to have a Colonoscopy. A Colonoscopy is a procedure where you have to take a bowel prep at home to clear your bowels, the hospital doing your procedure send you the bowel prep and instructions on how to take it. They are not nice , im not  going to lie, but they are doable, ive had 39 and have to have them every 3/5 yrs now for the rest of  my life as i had pre cancerous cells in a flat sessile polyp, so had to have  a right side of my bowel and small piece of intestine taken away. I also had ulcerstive colitis aged 18 but was lucky enough to have been treated in hospital  with tablets , and  i also have diverticulitis  im.not sure if ive spelt thst correctly, but its where you have pockets in your bowels where faeces can get stuck and cause pain.i hate to think of you worrying as you are, about if you have biowel cancer, but i realy thnk a colonoscopy would put your mibd at rest as it is a test thst woukd definitely pick up.any abnormalities in your bowel. As youve said " you have had no bleeding , that's a very goid sign , as with most bowel csncers there would  be bleeding. Anither possible thing thus lump could be is fibroids, but as your ultrasound didn't show up anything, i think yiu should ask if you can have a colonoscopy. Hope you get some answers soon as i hate to think of you worrying  yourself like this. Chin up.my lovely  and stay safe. Xx
