Thymoma or Lymphoma

So I’m a 21 year old female who became a mum 9 months ago.

A month after birth I experienced stomach pains and from then it’s been a horrible 8 months. I was anemic, my neutrophils were next to nothing, I developed gallstones, diagnosed with coeliac disease and just by the odd chance the woman who wanted to conduct surgery on my gallstones ask for a CT they found a mass.

When i seen the consulant he said said it was my adenoids and they would need to be removed, a week later I received a letter to see the lung consulant and a further phone call to see the consultant who referred me for the scan. They both said it was nothing, just a precaution and it probably wouldn’t mount to anything. I then received a letter about a possible thymoma or lymphona.

I then was scheduled to see the thoracic surgeon who has told me, looking at the mass, it’s likely to be thymoma but they cannot rule out lymphoma. I have to have a PET scan tomorrow and surgery is already booked for 2 weeks time. They made the decision to just remove and then do a biopsy because if it is thymoma they have removed the problem and I’ve already received the treatment they said. If it’s lymphoma i will need chemotherapy. I’m having a VATS procedure.

im scared, I’m nervous, I’m very young. What are the chances everything will be okay? And it could be neither of them? Thymoma isn’t really talked about much.

Sorry for the big long health history but it’s been a hectic 9 months and it feels good to get it off my chest and talk to others who may be experiencing similar things?

thank you for anybody whose taking their time to respond

  • Hello Chels1 and welcome to Cancer Chat!

I can imagine it must be a really difficult time for you. Waiting for results is always so stressful but I imagine the little baby is keeping you occupied. I hope this health worry which started just one month after the birth hasn't spoiled too much your enjoyment of being with your little one. Try not to worry too much if you can - hopefully you will find out very soon exactly what it is.

How did the PET scan go? Did you find out anything new? I hope the surgery goes well for you.

I hope you will meet others here who have been through a similar experience and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

I am going through a very similar situation to Chels1's ons. Was your thymoma or Lymphoma in the end?

My first suspected diagnosis was Lymphoma however, when the thoracic surgeon saw the CT scan images he said it might be a thymic carcinoma therefore surgery has been arranged to happen in 10 day from now.  I have asked for a biospy in orderto rule out the lymhoma so that we can procede with surgery after, since a Lymphoma cannot be removed. I do not want to be cut open if this is not a lymphoma. I feel very anxious now as, to this day, I still donot have a date for the biopsy and surgery will need to be postponed, if we need to have the biopsy results prir to the surgical intervention.

Shall I just trust the thoracic surgeon and have surgery first and a biopsy after or is it wise to wait any longer for the biopsy? I am very concerned as the pain is now persistent.

What do you suggest? I need some advice, please.

    Many Thanks in advance.
