Gastroscopy and colonoscopy with sedation

Hi

I'm due to have both procedures done on Wednesday and I'm absolutely terrified :( .One of my main concerns other than the actual procedures themselves and results is the sedation wearing off halfway through due to the added time length of two procedure's one after the other. Has anybody had this done?

  • I’m afraid I cannot offer advice but I’m in exactly the same boat as you. I have both procedures and I’m definitely going for sedation but I don’t know how the timings work and how long between the two prosecures. Anyone who’s been through the same thing, your advice would be welcomed. Mine is in September. I hope it all goes okay for you, the build up makes the worry stronger m.

  • Hi there,

i’m hoping I can provide a little reassurance for both you and nica, and anyone else who is in the same situation and reads this. I am an endoscopy Nurse by background.

During your procedure your team will use conscious sedation (a method of sedating you lightly to help keep you comfortable and ensure that you are awake enough to cooperate-there can be some position changing during the colonoscopy to help get around the bends). You will also be given a painkiller.

while the idea is for you to remain awake, generally the sedation makes people forget about the whole thing.

you will probably be given some sedation before the first procedure (OGD was generally done first on my Unit) and then a bit of a top up before starting the second procedure.

Everyone reacts differently to sedation and to avoid giving you too much straight away, you will most likely be given small a small dose, which can be repeated over f it doesn’t work.
