Suspected melanoma (tests came back negative for infection &

I was referred to a specialist back in July for a suspected melanoma. The specialist did a visual exam of the issue and took a nail scraping.

Without the results coming back he put me on antifungal antibiots for 3-6 months.

However today I have had back the results from the nail scraping and it’s come back negative for infection and fungal nail.

All I can do is make another appointment to talk to my GP because my black toenail is getting really painful, and it’s lifting because of a lump under it.

Anyone else been in this situation?

is there anyone else I should contact other than my GP?

  • Hi,

I would contact your GP first & see what they suggest. Did the dermatologist suggest further investigation if the scraping was negative for infection? If it was me I would hope the GP would again refer back to the dermatologist for a biopsy for melanoma. Subungal melanoma isn't common but it's also easy to miss so I would push for another referral. Good luck,

  • I agree with Angie i have just been dx with melanoma on my scalp after biopsy aparently it is not what the consultant dermatologists  i saw was expecting they said i had shocked them all ...i even saw 4 different GP's at my practice who were telling me its not cancer they do not remve these put olive oil on it it looks dry its fungal gave me fungal cream....definitly go back and ask for another referal second opinion...best of luck
