Ovarian Cancer diagnosis procedure

Hello,

I've been having some adominal pain (right side), swelling, and problems urinating for some time. I'm 30 years old, and have PCOS. I susepected the pain was due to a cysts associated with PCOS rupturing, and went to the doctor to see if I'd need a scan, as I hadn't had one for a year.

I had the scan two days ago. It was initially an external one, but the technician got excited about something then did an internal one. She asked if I were having any pain on my right hand side, then spent several minutes looking at a cyst on my right ovary. She said she was concerned that the cyst wasnt 'functional' and was requesting a blood test. I asked what the blood test was for and she was pretty vague, so obviously I did the stupid thing and googled immeidately after I left.

It seems quite clear to me that the blood test is to rule out ovarian cancer. The thing that has thrown me a bit is that in everything I have read, scans usually happen after a positive blood test, as the blood tests arent entirely accurate, and can give false positives. I've read that if people have symptoms, and a mass is seen, doctors will often go ahead with surgery and test the mass after it's been removed. Does anyone know if this is true? As much as my own health is a priority, I haven't had children yet, and would hate to jeopardise my chances of doing so without knowing for certain that a procedure is required.

I'm very sorry for writing my worries here, I'm aware that most people using this forum will have far more reason to worry than me, but my Mum has early onset dementia so I just don't feel like I have anyone to talk about this with.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum and please don't apologise for posting. That's why we're here.

It's understandable that you're feeling worried given your symptoms and the scan this week. It's natural to worry about these things although unfortunately Dr Google isn't the most reliable nor helpful source of information and often makes things worse.

I'm presuming that you had a CA125 test which your right is used as part of the diagnosis process for ovarian cancer in conjunction with a scan and other tests. It would seem sensible that the blood test was ordered given all the things you've described and hopefully this will help your Dr to have a much fuller picture of what is going on for you at the moment.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for an appointment to discuss the results. If surgery is felt to be the appropriate path for you then I'm sure that your Consultant will be happy to discuss how this may or may not impact your fertility and what options may be available.

I know that none of this is particularly reassuring or helpful at the moment. This period of uncertainty waiting for test results can be very difficult and if you'd like to talk through your concerns and questions with our team of nurses then I'm sure they'd be able to offer some advice and support. You can call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes,
