I'm terrified I have womb cancer - doctor's reaction

Hi all, I'm Sarah-21.

I've suffered with PCOS for years and my periods have never been "normal" . When I was diagnosed 3 years ago, the doctors told me what to be aware of and what I am at risk for. Endometrial cancer was mentioned- as PCOS sufferers are high risk patients as the womb lining doesn't shed as often as it should.

I went to the doctors last week, as I haven't had a period in 9 months (no pregnancy!), but I have been getting dark bloody discharge and pain. As soon as I told her, she jumped out of her seat and ran out the door to cancel her next appointment. This set alarm bells ringing. She did a physical exam and a smear test which I wasn't expecting at all. She has reffered me for 2 scans (which I recieved yesterday) an ultrasound and a transvaginal scan. The doctor told me that she highly suggests that I have the coil fitted, as my womb lining would shed as my risk for cancer, as of now, is high.

The scans are for the end of this month, and I have never been this terrified before. I've never seen a doctor react in such panic. She didn't give me any reassurance that I don't have it or any other condition. Everything seems to have happened so quickly!

I'm losing sleep over this and it's all my brain seems to fixate on. Any suggestions?

I hope you're all well.

Take care,

Sarah :)

  • Hello Sarah,

You've totally done the right thing in getting it all checked out at the doctor's and it's great that they are being thorough and doing all these tests even though it is undeniably a very stressful time for you. I hope you won't have to wait too long to have your scans.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this during what feels like a long wait is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. I thought I would also share this link with you which has some good strategies to help you cope while waiting.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
