Thyroid Lobectomy Decision

Hi, this is my first time posting but have been reading others posts for several months & they’ve been so helpful.

My story is that I found an enlarged lymph node in my left clavicle area in Dec, after having pain in my collarbone for some months. GP referred me urgently for investigations which included X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, blood tests etc. They didn’t seem too concerned about the lymph node but discovered a nodule on my thyroid which they rescanned 3 months later. There was no change on the rescan but the result was U3 so they decided to do a FNA biopsy. Unfortunately this was “inadequate”.

So back to see consultant yesterday & he (& his registrar who popped in) has advised that I have a left lobectomy to be sure. I’m terrified of surgery & because they’ve never really seemed that concerned, I just feel like it’s taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut & I genuinely don’t know what to do. If any scan or biopsy really suggested cancer then of course I would go ahead. I don’t want to go through surgery unnecessarily but at the same time, I know leaving it is a bit of a gamble. He did say if I don’t want to go ahead I could opt to have it rescanned in 6 months & take it from there.

Just don’t know what to do!!!!

Many advice or personal stories of the surgery & experiences would be hugely appreciated

TIA

  • Thank you, it is a big relief & I was so glad when the operation was over, I was so anxious about having it done.
In my pre-op assessment they did a urine test, blood tests, measured height & weight, blood pressure & asked a lot of questions regarding my medical history including previous operations. I also had to have an ECG as I occasionally have an irregular heartbeat but that was fine. Good luck & hope all goes well for you.

  • Thanks! I have a phobia of blood tests (am done with needles generally  and so have been getting some hypnotherapy so hope it's not too traumatic for me.....

    I'll keep you posted

    Appreciate your input

  • Hi Jinty14,

just wanted to message to give you some reassurance. I had an FNA and a thy3f (abnormal cells but no seen cancer cells) and had a right side hemithyroidectomy 8 days ago.
I was so anxious about the surgery and recovery and it really hasn't been that bad.
I made lots of soups to have post op in case I had difficulty swallowing and I did for the first couple of days but more from the GA tube then the actual op.
I have not found it painful post operatively, more the stiffness of my neck was the problem. On the internet on the Guy's and St Thomas hospital website they have a PDF of exercises for patients post thyroid surgery which I have found really relived my neck stiffness and after 5-6 days of doing these I have really loosened up (maybe show them to your consultant and ask if they think they are suitable)

I bought a couple of neck pillows for post op and by far found a pregnancy pillow that's in a big C shape the best (I bought it off amazon) it supports your shoulders and neck really well. I have been sleeping on it and using it to prop me up when sitting on the sofa.

I felt really well in myself straight after the op and have been walking lots for exercise.

Sending you lots of well wishes.

  • Dear flowerf4iry Thnaks a million for your post.....it has really helped me.

Glad you are doing well in your recovery.

My op date has been put back to 20th Nov as my consultant has sone holiday booked and theres a couple of more urgent cases to do.

I'm calm for now but every so often I find my mind wandering to the thought of it all.

That's great advice on the pillows.  Coincidentally I came across the neck exercises and have then printed out.

I'll let you know how it all goes.

  • All the best for 20th of November. If you think of any questions feel free to message me. Stay calm and eat lots of nourishing food! Good luck!

  • I wasn't going to have the op but my sister forced me too if she hadn't I would have cancer everywhere now. I hope you managed to make your desicion xx

  • Had op last Wednesday and all went well. First few days was sore and very tired but getting better.

Well worth it. See consultant in 6 weeks time.

  • Glad you are starting to feel a bit better Jinty14. Good luck for your results and the rest of your recovery!
