Abnormal smear results needing further investigation

Hi,

hoping someone can assist me with this.

I recieved a call 8 days after my smear from my doctor saying I wasn’t to be alarmed but to expect a letter requesting I go for further investigation after finding abnormalities in my recent smear. I’ve been getting smears every 6 months for over 3 years, being told I could go back to 3 yearly, this only lasted a year before I had bleeding during sex, prolonged bleeding between periods and abdominal pain, when asking the doctor what they would be looking for I was told cancer cells. Obviously I was a tad bit alarmed but settled down and thought ok, that’s fine let’s just wait and see. I’ve received my letter now but it doesn’t say anything other than abnormalities requiring further investigation. Doesn’t really explain what abnormalities or if it’s minor etc. I know this is most likely nothing to worry about, but I’m just more confused as to why the doctor would call at all and when asking for a chance to read the letter days later at the doctors I was told nothing was on file, why would that be if the doctor called me days prior.... as you can understand this has heightened my anxiety as how would the doctor know about my results if a letter had not yet been received. Now waiting on my appt. thoughts anyone

kind regards
