Throat MRI?

I’m freaking out.

I’m 25 and have been suffering with a sore throat for four weeks on the right side around the tonsil area.

I saw an ENT last night that put a camera up my nose and down my the throat and had a good look and poke around. He thinks it could be a tonsil stone that he can’t get at. He also said that it wasn’t anything to worry about.

Then I saw another ENT tonight who didn’t use a camera and said I need to go for an MRI. He also says that a tonsil stone doesn’t cause pain. This ENT was private so the scan would cost £££.

I’m confused as seeing the ENT last night totally put my mind at risk. But seeing one tonight has really worried me.

I’d appreciate any advice...

  • Hiya

yes my outcome was very similar . My mri showed nothing suspicious, they gave me the option of removing the tonsils to be more sure but I declined.
I did get a second opinion as we have axa private cover and the Dr told me I didn't need my tonsil out and that tonsils are like feet , some people just have one bigger than the other. it's quite common .
the pain eventually went although it took a while and it just niggles from time to time , I'm pretty sure I have hidden tonsil stones causing the pain in my neck and ear , the dr thought so too. This was over a year ago and thankfully all is still fine .
    all the best to you

  • Thanks for the reassurance, I too am lucky enough to be covered by insurance, so the tests were carried out by Nuffield. Your feed back has made me feel less anxious until my next appointment, really appreciate your feedback.

I hadn't realised the significance of a larger tonsil until I looked it up after my consultation.

  • I went to the Nuffield too , great service . You will be fine!
number one rule the dr told me was not to google!
a lot of people have one tonsil bigger than the other.
The dr told me that unless I was over 50 , a smoker , had neck lumps and had weight loss it would be quite rare for it to be sinister .
let me know how you get on , take care x

  • Hey everyone I hope you all had positive results & feeling better now.

Was glad to find this thread as I've been experiencing much of the same as you guys, I've felt a lump in my throat when swallowing for a few months so being a smoker i decided to see the Dr approx 2 weeks ago, she put me on the 2 week plan thing so in a very short time I had a chest xray, ent appointment for camera up my nose & down into my throat, he said he couldn't see anything obvious, he mentioned paleness of an area & also tongue bumps being slightly raised which is common in smokers, he referred me for an urgent mri & blood tests to check kidney function etc due to needing contrast. I had the mri last week, had to chase for results as requested by ent they don't automatically go to my Dr, was told nothing showed up, mentioned the lump is prob caused by acid as I do get heartburn.

Re the mri, the tech asked the guy before me if he enjoyed the massage, during mine after contrast was put in half way through it felt like the bed was punching me in the back really quickly alternating from left to right which was pretty horrendous, if it'd been any harder it would have winded me, the tech asked me the same question 'did I enjoy the massge' to which I replied it was hard-core!!

I've since tried to find out if that's normal as I never experienced that on an mri I had a couple of years ago & couldn't find anything on line so eventually got hold of the unit manager, he went through various things that happen depending on what they're looking for & said people have mentioned vibrating sensations etc but never the punching feeling, has anyone here had that happen?

Anyway, I still have the lump which felt bigger 2 nights ago & almost caused me to have a panic attack, the week leading up to the camera I had ear pain in my left ear that woke ne up & I've had a slightly sore throat the last few days, I'm constantly having to clear my throat as well.

Am about to call the Dr's to see if the results are there & to see what suggested next
