Throat MRI?

I’m freaking out.

I’m 25 and have been suffering with a sore throat for four weeks on the right side around the tonsil area.

I saw an ENT last night that put a camera up my nose and down my the throat and had a good look and poke around. He thinks it could be a tonsil stone that he can’t get at. He also said that it wasn’t anything to worry about.

Then I saw another ENT tonight who didn’t use a camera and said I need to go for an MRI. He also says that a tonsil stone doesn’t cause pain. This ENT was private so the scan would cost £££.

I’m confused as seeing the ENT last night totally put my mind at risk. But seeing one tonight has really worried me.

I’d appreciate any advice...

  • [@Winnie14]‍  yeah deffo! Although he said to see him in 4 weeks to make sure it's gone away but my gut tells me it probably won't because mine are still here! OoOoo my tonsils are like that but the doctor suspects a cysts I forgot the name on one of my tonsils rather than in my mouth! I have the ear pain I guess same symptoms only I can feel heaps of lymph nodes too in various places glad you found it all okay, how long did it last? Mine was about 25 minutes without contrast! Nervous it won't pick up anything bad because I didn't use the contrast so I'm kind of glad they are seeing me face to face so they can feel them and know I'm not going mad xxx

  • Yeah I can feel something in my tonsil all the time , maybe a stone? Not sure if the mri would have picked that up.
I was in the scanner around  30 mins max - went in without contrast then half way through they slid me out and injected the contrast then slid me back in ... didn't feel anything from it at all .
do you feel ok in yourself? Xxx

  • Oh that's interesting I wonder why they did no contrast to start with! We agreed we would start without and see how it goes and it was agreed they didn't need it but wish I had lol! Ahh yeah that's fab! I have tonsil stone they don't worry me but the ugly blister looking thing does haha!!

yeah honestly I feel fine, I get a sore throat and ear pain but that's it no night sweats weight loss etc so it's odd really. I'm mostly worried about lymphoma I think, especially because of coronavirus! But time will tell! How are you feeling? Xxx

  • I think it's standard to put in half way through to see the changes the dye makes? I'm not sure to be honest .
what does your tonsil blister look like? My tonsils are very lumpy and holey.
glad you feel ok , I'm about the same ... earache that comes and goes and pain down the neck under the ear and just feel a bit tired but I'm not sleeping too well with all the worry . let me know how your appointment goes , will be thinking of you and hoping for all the best xxx

  • Hi,

I'm in the same position as you all! Tonsil stones started appearing in one tonsil about 4 months ago. Misdiagnosed over the phone over lock down as tonsillitis, but didn't help the pain. It was since noted on a face to face appt that my opposite tonsil to the troublesome stone filled one, is enlarged and I now gey a lot of pain in here with ear pain and neck pain. After seeing ENT last week they have said one of my lymph glands is slightly raised and its definitely enlarged and hard?! I'm being sent for MRI at the weekend and I just wondered how you had all gotten on since you last posted please? I'm terrified!

  • Hi par123 I’m sorry you find yourself in this horrible situation. My mri scan came back clear and now I’ve got to decide if to go for a tonsillectomy to be 100 percent sure . I’m back to see the dr in a couple of months . I’m hoping all my symptoms disappear before then and it doesn’t come to that. There’s many reasons that can give you a swollen tonsil that I have learnt from this forum , cancer being the least likely but it’s good they are scanning you . They always start at the top to rule out the worst. Let us know how your scan goes at the weekend and try to relax , I know it’s easier said than done. Here if you need a chat anytime . Wx

  • Hi Winnie,

Thank you so much for replying to me. Great news that your MRI was clear! I imagine its a tough decision in regards to the surgery. The ENT doctor said, either way i will need to have mine out. The results just depend on how urgently.

He wasn't particularly reassuring and gave me only the 2 options for enlargement. A hidden stone, or cancer. I wasn't aware of any other reasons for them to be swollen. I understand that they are ruling things out, which is good, its just an awful wait isn't it. I feel like the worry consumes me most days.

Thank you, I will let you know how I get on x

  • Hello I thought I'd reply as I've had a similar situation lately. I've had one enlarged tonsil for about 3 years now and past year had lots of sore throats and then a few pea sized lymph nodes came up on neck. Had an mri which all came back clear how ever as I've been waiting for a tonsillectomy all year anyway i am

having one in a few weeks! I was told under the mri the larger tonsil only appears marginally bigger which was a relief but still I can't wait to get them out due to my anxiety. I've also got a large firm oval palpable lump back of neck which also could not be seen on mri even with a marker on and contrast used. I'm very confused and worried about that as I can feel it although it cannot he seen. Dr thought tendon and didn't seem too

concerned!? But I'm going out of my mind. Good luck

  • Hi everyone,

how did you find the mri? I have one on saturday and to say I'm pooing myself is an understatement! I have a huge lump on my tonsil! Did you feel safe in there? Is it a small space? I've had an MRI on pelvis and foot before and that was bad enough without head being in there! Any advise greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Winnie,

I stumbled across your story. I have had almost identical symptoms to you. Neck pain, slight ear ache radiating to the jaw at times (mainly on the right side) also a cough to clear throat persistently.

I had an Endoscopy which identified a larger right tonsil and signs of GERD, then referred for an MRI. Had the follow up consultation this evening, the consultant confirmed the larger tonsil but said the MRI didn't pick up anything suspicious, however he said that the only way of knowing 100% that the MRI hasn't missed anything would be to remove the tonsils. He said it could just be genetics.

He recommended I go back in 8 weeks for another Endoscopy to double check any changes. Wondering how your follow up went, and whether you symptoms (pain pain etc) we're linked and are still there.

    Thanks
