Smear test scare

I had a smear test two weeks ago and the nurse found a lump on my cervix.. The doctor had a look too and said she wasnt too worried and to wait until smear test result, however Dr called the following day to say she'd sent off a gynea refferal anyway... Im so worried now....

  • Hi there - it's always a bit worrying when doctors refer us for things but I think that 90% of the time they are just being cautious. Good job that they do because they very often catch things early. Honestly I wouldn't worry too much at all. Sounds like you've got a good GP & she did say she wasn't too worried - as I sy she's probably just being cautious. Good luck.

  • Hi Misssmith,

I've had a similar thing happen to me. I went for a smear test on Tuesday this week - over 18 months late as the doctor's surgery had the wrong address for me so I didn't receive a letter (could have sworn I had updated them...)

Anyway, as the nurse was taking my smear, she said she could see something on my cervix - some kind of growth, which she said could be a polyp but she couldn't be sure as my period was about to start. She said it was a little red around the edges, which could indicate it was changing and it bled when touched. She asked one of the female doctors to examine me there and then and the doctor said the same thing. I have been referred to the hospital to see a gynaecologist and I'm petrified as to what it could be. I was told up to three weeks wait for an appointment. I've been so worried that my partner has paid for me to go private and I have an appointment on Monday morning. I so scared, it's all I'm thinking about. I'm especially worried as my smear was due in December 2017 so I'm very late having it done :(

I really hope things are ok for ypu, well for us both really. Wishing you all the best - I hope to hear how you get on xxx

  • Bless you, it is worrying... Great you're being seen on Monday, I'm sure these specialists see these things all the time so hopefully can give you an explanation pretty much straight away... I will keep everything crossed for you... Let me know how you get on :) x

  • Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, it is realy worrying. I just keep going over it all in my head and fearing the worst :( I wouldn't be so worried if it wasn't for the fact that I was so late having my smear trst done. I hope all is ok for you as well. Best wishes xxx
