Lump on side of neck

I posted a couple of weeks ago. I noticed a small lump on the lower side of my neck a couple of weeks ago. I freaked out and have been in a panic ever since. It's small (pea sized) movable and fairly squishy and hasn't changed in two weeks. I finally got an appointment today with my GP. She felt the rest of my neck and head, looked down my throat, listened to my chest and said everything else seemed ok. She could feel the lump and said it was very small. She said she didn't think it was anything sinister but would refer me for a urgent scan (within two weeks) so now I'm panicking that she did think it was something otherwise why would she send me urgently? She has also sent me for bloods which I had some today....when I have the scan will I be told there and then if it's ok? Or something to worry about? Will an ultra sound be able to identify Lymphoma? Will my blood tests identify Lymphoma?

  • Hi Tinkerbell,

Well done for plucking up the courage to see your GP about this lump. It's easy to panic about these things.

Your GP told you that she doesn't think there's anything sinister so it sounds as if she's just being cautious in ordering these additional tests. Although you've been referred for an "urgent" scan try to remember that the majority of these kind of things turn out to be nothing to worry about.

It's unlikely that whoever is doing the scan will be able to give you any results there and then. Typically all the test results would be looked at together in order to decide if further tests are needed or if everything is fine. Unfortunately it will be a case of waiting now until all those results are back. We know that lots of people find that to be a particularly difficult period of time but try to keep busy and take one day at a time. Don't ask Dr Google, he's very unreliable!

I hope that you have some news soon.

  • Hi thanks for the reply, I went for my blood tests on Wednesday morning. I thought I'd ring just to see if my results were in just in the off chance as I didn't think my anxiety could last all weekend. It was back and the receptionist said "yes the doctor wants to see you within a week"  obviously I freaked out and asked a million questions. He said it was a non urgent appointment. The doctor sent me for a full blood count, thyroid check, liver and kidney function. I haven't had the scan yet but now I'm completely freaking out that something has been found in my blood work that's not good. I have severe anxiety and had a panic attack today because of all this.

  • Hi Tinkerbell,

I'm sure that if there was something of serious concern that the Dr would have asked to see you sooner. Try to take the fact that it's a none urgent appointment as a good sign.

It might be worth chatting to your GP next week about your anxiety as well to see if they are able to offer you some support in managing things. I'm not sure if you've seen the website NHS Moodzone but they have some helpful tips for coping with anxiety,

  • Thanks I'm just getting myself all in a tiz now. It's effected my mood the whole day thinking the worst. They said the doctor wants to see me within a week. So I'm hoping as you said if it was something sinister they would have seen me today since I phoned up this morning?

  • Thought I'd update just got my letter through for my scan. I'm booked for this Wednesday at 7.30pm.

  • I am so very frightened at what the doctor is going to say about my blood test results, worries il be referred on, more waiting.....or worried they will say something is wrong....I'm terrified and what this nightmare to be over. I think I've thrown myself into a panic. I joined a Facebook group for lymphoma as that's what I'm worried I have. I think it's made matters worse for me ️

  • Thought I'd give another update, so after getting myself in an absolute state about my blood test results and emailing the doctor about my anxiety the doctor actually phoned me. She said my liver, kidney, thyroid and iron were all fine. The only thing was my white blood cells and inflammatory markers were slightly raised indicating a previous infection. She said to still go for the scan but she didn't think it was anything sinister to worry about. I am still obvious anxious about the scan. I did have very bad tonsillitis end of may then an ear infection, then had a tattoo mid June which went a bit sore. I had also had a flare up of Gastritis a week before the blood test. I can't help but still feel anxious.

  • Scan Tomo and I feel sick with nerves ️

  • Hi

You will feel anxious of course and your raised white cell count will probably be due to the tonsillitis that you had..When I had my neck lump I could not account for any infections as am always so well..

I understand your anxiety about having the scans too,

I hated going and took my daughter (27) with me into the room so she could scrutinize everything from the expression on the Consultant's face and whether the lump had a blood supply on screen.

Fortunately mine was OK and sure yours will be too.

The only way to find out is to go to have the scan done for your piece of mind. I felt like a zombie thinking why am I here ? but was soon celebrating after the Consultant said nothing to worry about. I still have the lump 2 years later albeit a bit smaller.

Also GP's have to follow NICE guidelines if a patient presents with a neck lump .My GP didn't think mine too much to worry about either .....but OMG ..I did.

Best wishes to you .Please let me know the result as will celebrate with you.xxx
