Can't cope with the waiting

I know loads of people are in the same boat, and some of you much worse off than me, but I'm really struggling with the wait for my breast clinic appointment.  I found a sizable lump in my breast on Saturday, went to GP on Monday and got referred to the clinic.  Unfortunately I go on holiday on the 12th August, so they can't see me until 20th.

I know all the statistics say that it's unlikely to be cancer, but I just can't put it out of my head.  The lump is large, hard and doesn't move.  I have a history of breast cancer in my family and I'm 40 years old.

Has anyone got any tips on how to calm down and not worry about this?  I've been having panic attacks, I can't concentrate on work, and I don't want to socialise with anyone... I feel like the holiday is going to be ruined now and we've been looking forward to it for so long.

Good grief I sound like I'm wallowing in self pity today!  Sorry.  Just needed to vent I think.

  • Hi Kitkat.

I’m in exactly the same boat as you. I’m always breast aware so check myself on a regular basis.

Im a very anxious person and take Citalopram for my anxiety. Friday gone one evening my son jumped on me and I put my hand to my right breast to protect them as his elbows have a habit for aiming right at my breast.

I emerdiatly felt a lump when I pressed down just above my nipple .

I emerdiatly  went into sheer panic and got my bf to check. He could feel it too. It’s felt with the pads of two fingers. It’s a firm lump and I’m sure it moves and can be pushed but not sure.

I managed to get an appointment with a dr on Saturday. He gave me a thorough breast exam and explained to me that mine feels like fibrous tissue and not a cancer lump. He adviced to have it checked anyway at the breast clinic and arrange with my drs on the Monday.

Monday gone I had another breast exam. She said it felt cystic and quite firm and then she had me referred to the breast clinic. My appointment is Wednesday 7th August. A day before my 45th Birthday.

I have been pacing back and forth. Crying. Getting in a panic and state. Sometimes I’m ok and dealing with it and next I’m not. Thinking the worst. Not eating  very much as stomach is in knots. The waiting is a nightmare.

For people suffering severe anxiety problems this is torturous. I can’t focus. Some friends have tried putting my mind off it. All I keep thinking is the worst. My partner has been supporting me and told me to listen to the drs and it they thought it was a cancer lump they would have said there and then and not said Fibrous Tissue or Cyst. ! Just feels like I’m in limbo and if I’m like this now I dread to think how I’m going to be next Wednesday. I also keep messing the lump which don’t help.

So I know how you feel. I hope you get seen pretty soon.

  • Hi Yeti,

I'm sorry you're in this position too and it must be even worse if you already have heightened anxiety.  It helps to know I'm not the only one going crazy!  I feel really silly because I don't even know yet that it's anything to worry about.  People on this chat forum have much bigger problems than me to worry about, but I just can't help myself.... my mind just immediately jumps to the worst possible scenario.

I've managed to keep focussed on work today and haven't been too bad.  But yesterday I had a full blown panic attack - hyperventilating and sobbing... I'll be a wreck by the time my appointment comes round on the 20th!

Let me know how you get on on the 7th - it sounds positive if they're talking about cysts and fibrous.  I'll have my fingers crossed for you

  • Thankyou. I will for you too. I was the same yesterday as well and in tears thinking the worst with extreme panic. I keep doubting what the drs think it is. The lump just appeared as I know it’s only been recent. I press down a bit and there it is. I’m not even sure if it’s round or bean shaped. I’m trying to focus on other things. I’m better today then I was all over the weekend and yesterday.

I have generalised anxiety and health anxiety so you can imagine this is like a complete horror hell for me. I even tried getting my appointment sooner but couldn’t. I just want next Wednesday to hurry the duck up and then I will be even more petrified going  but have to get it sorted  I’m away this weekend so hopefully after that time will zoom so I can get to that clinic  x

  • Hello Kitkat and Yeti, I suffer from health anxiety too.  About a month ago I found a lump in my armpit and worried about it until I eventually went to the GP, 4 days before going on a weeks river cruise.   She gave me an urgent  2 week referral for breast screening.   On the way up to the airport the following Monday I got a phone call from the hospital.  The holiday should have been lovely but I had only one thing on my mind.  My apppoint was last Friday I had mammograms, and ultasound.  Ironically the side with the underarm lump is fine but I have microcalcification in the left breast which look suspicious   Today I went for a needle biopsy and I must say it wasn't too bad.  I can do pain and discomfort but my anxious mind is my worst enemy.  I go back next Thursday for the results.  My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer and my aunt, her daughter is being treated for it.  I have gone into a dark place.  A friend of mine suggested that I visit my GP for an anti-depressant.    I cant wait for the time to be over between now and next Thursday and I am just getting through each day, wish that I could be calmer.

  • Hi Christmas2018,

It seems it's stressful for everyone and there's nothing for it but to wait it out.  I've been distrcacted today which has really helped.  The panic attack yesterday was really frightening and I don't want to ever feel like that again.

It sounds like maybe you should consider an antidepressant if you're strugging.

I hope you're not too sore from the needle biopsy and that your Thursday appointment comes round quickly for you.

    Kate

  • Hi Kate, so far i'm not really sore, I expect the bruising will come out tomorrow and they said not to get it wet for 24 hours or do anything strenuous.  Difficult in my job!
