Constant abnormal bleeding

I'm not really sure what's relevant and what isn't so abit about me incase its relevant  ...

I'm 24. Overweight but currently on slimming world and doing very well. Usually healthyish although my immune system is rubbish. I have 2 boys and have had 3 miscarriages. I havent had a smear yet as I have been told numerous times I cant have one until 25.

My periods were always regular regardless of what contraception I was using. In 2013 I had my implant removed and had no contraception since then.

Before I found out I was pregnant with my son I missed 2 consecutive periods. (My son is now 15 months old). When I had my first early scan due to the previous miscarriages they said I had 2 cysts on my ovary which are the type you get when an egg comes through. But nothing abnormal was noted.

Fast forward to after my son was born. I had my first period when he was 2 months old. After that they vanished but I was getting period type pains. I went to the gp who examined my cervix and also took swabs - exam was fine and tests were clear. They put it down to hormones and gave me the pill to try and regulate things.

The pill made me bleed constantly and gave me migraines. It was getting to the point I was taking more medication just to try and stop the constant bleeding so I decided to stop the pill.

My partner was approved for a vasectomy and given a date in a few months time, so I was advised to have the depo injection just to cover myself until the vasectomy was done.

I had my first depo in september and although a bit of bleeding it was overall ok. During the next few weeks I did have bleeding after intercourse twice. This was looked into by the gp and they put it down to old blood from the constant bleeding.

Next injection was december and after that I bled pretty much straight through to February. I was so depressed by it as my son was diagnosed with a rare health problem and was in and out of hospital so the bleeding was just such a nightmare on top of all that . I went back to the gp who did more swabs and another exam which were all fine.

In march my next depo was due but I decided against it as the constant bleeding was driving me insane. So I didnt get it done. I had very very minimal bleeding between March and June, maybe 2 incidents of light spotting but nothing much.

June 22nd I started bleeding. It was the worst period I have ever had and was extremely painful. It lasted 6 days then stopped.

5 days later I started bleeding again, same as before in terms of amount and pain. I thought it was abit odd so I rang the gp to check. They said they thought it was down to the depo but it would be good to be checked again.

The second bout of bleeding stopped again after 6 days and I went to the doctors appointment for another exam which was normal. She said she saw old looking blood but my cervix looked fine.

She advised the implant again to try and regulate things.

3 hours after the exam I had stomach cramps and bleeding. Wasnt a full blown period amount but enough to use pads.

This lasted 5 days then stopped.

Now, 1 week after that doctors visit I'm bleeding again.

I get stomach cramps and lower back ache with each episode of bleeding. No abnormal discharge etc noticed.

I'm so fed up and deflated by it all and it's taking over my life. I have severe medical anxiety and I am convinced this isn't the depo and something is very wrong.

I'm not sure what to do or ask for etc. I'm just so worried and fed up

  • Hi Abbyjade23,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about all the difficulties you've been going through recently - I'm sure this is incredibly frustrating and worrying. It's natural of course to be concerned when things aren't feeling right, but I'm glad to hear you've been in touch with your GP.

I'm unable to advise on anything to do with your situation and I can only recommend working to try to get a definite answer from your GP to help with peace of mind. If you're unsure about seeing the same GP again, you could ask to see someone else.

It sounds like you have a good handle on the symptoms you've been experiencing, so just make sure you go through this with them so they can see the pattern of how things have been recently.

If you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
