Second biopsy

Hi everyone, I’m hoping one of you kind people can calm me down !

I had a routine mammogram a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday morning I opened a letter asking me to go to the Breast Assessment Centre at 10 o’clock. It’s over an hours drive so I set off straight away - on my own .

I was seen straight away so had no time to worry, had another mammogram then an ultra sound with Radiologist who told me I had a small area of micrcalcifaction (which can sometimes be a sign of early cancer ) and a very small mass of some kind in the same area. She spent a long time looking and said there was no sign  of anything in my lymph nodes - which was good.

I then had another more detailed mammogram, an X-ray, some core biopsies (3, I think ) and she left in 2 titanium markers. I then signed a consent form for a Mammophone Biopsy so that she could remove all the microcalcification . I was going to have it then, but when they came back in they asked if I could come back the next day at 12 instead - as I’d  come on my own and they were worried about me driving myself home. They want someone to come with me. I couldn’t do today because of work and because I’d have to find someone to drive me.

I now have to wait a week because they had no other slots available and I am really worried.

I couldn’t get hold of them today .

Is it normal to be told you have to have someone with you for a mammophome biopsy and/or that you shouldn’t drive?

I’m also worrried that she left markers in - having spent so long looking.

Any information/ advice would be very welcome - there’s only much I can in this heat to keep busy !

Thanks

x

  • Hi Jo, thank goodness, all is ok.   My anxiety has been so high during the previous weeks , I think that I used up all my energy and after Thursday,  despite the best news I have been SO tired .  Feeeling better as each day goes by. Howhave you got on? xxx

  • That’s fantastic news Lyn. It is exhausting worrying and waiting - you don’t realise how much it has taken out of you until later on.

My results weren’t great, but not that bad either. The mass they biopsied was just normal tissue so that was good. In the other area they looked at - where the microcalcification was - they found a small amount of non invasive cancer. They also want to look at another bit on the edge of where they biopsied last time as they think there is some invasive cancer there.

I’m having a lumpectomy and two lymph nodes removed on 11 September. I will have to take medication for 5 years and may also need radiotherapy - but almost certainly not chemo .

I actually felt better after being told - it feels less stressful than the not knowing. For now anyway !

I hope you can enjoy the rest of your summer now !

    love

    Jo

  • Hi Jo, I am sorry to hear that you are going to need treatment, but as you say your results could have been a lot worse.  Thank goodness for routine mammograms that pick these things up at an early stage. My aunt had breast cancer treatment last year, lumpectomy, radiotherapy and is also on medication for five years.  She had no problems whatsoever, and she is 76 years old.  Do keep in touch and let me know how you get on, wishing the very best.
