Breast Clinic - fearing the worst

Hi All

I am new to these forums.   I recently found a hard lump on my left breast and a swollen node under my arm.  My GP referred me to the breast clinic and today I had a mammogram, ultrasound and core biopsy.   The mammogram was unclear but the ultrasound showed some cysts that were covering a lump which doesn’t have defined edges.   They said there is thickening around the nipple and it’s suspicious.   I have to wait two weeks.  The Dr said they will discuss as a team next moves and then contact me with another appointment.   I am swinging from feeling positive and then hopeless.   I have a history of anaemia and b12 deficiency so am worried physically I will struggle with treatment.   It just feels so overwhelming.  My Husband and kids have been amazing but I hate what the worry is doing to them.  I have a really stressful job and wonder how I’ll cope if it’s confirmed as bad news.   Anyway it’s good to vent and I hope to chat to some of you more.

  • Hi there I too get my results on Thursday. Had a lumpectomy done on 10 July and it has seemed a long wait. Trying to keep busy and not think about it too much x

    Best wishes Mary

  • Hi Mary, it seems that there are a few of us waiting anxiously for Thursday to come around.  You have had such a long wait, did they tell you on the 10th of July it would take all this time for your follow up appointment?  It seems like waiting times vary around the country.  Yesterday following blood tests the previous week, I received a letter from my GP requesting a second kidney function blood test.  When I phoned the surgery to make an appointment I was told that there was a three week wait!  Apparently I can pick up a form from the GP and go to the hospital as a walk in and have it there.  I will probably have it done in the morning before my results appointment in the afternoon, just got to find out what the hours that the department is open.  I could do without this additional worry!   Wishing the very best result on Thursday.  Lyn xxx

  • Hi Lyn yes they said it would be four weeks. It’s probably felt like the longest four weeks of my life! Just want to find out now if they removed all the cancer and with good margins. I expect to have radiotherapy but will see what they say on Thursday.

hope that everything is ok with your kidney function test. It’s just added stress as if it isn’t stressful enough at the moment!

Wishing you well and let’s keep in touch.

  • Hi Mary, thank goodness for mammograms.  I hope that the cancer has all been removed, my  maternal Aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer last year after she felt a lump, she is elderly and a private person, so she has not gone into detail about it.  I do know that some sort of test that she had on the NHS was sent off to the USA regarding treatment, radiotherapy and or chemo The result came back borderline so she decided on radiotherapy alone, she is 76 yeard old.  The radiotherapy went very well with few side effects, she takes some sort of tablet and as to date she is back to normal.  I wonder if sending off results to the USA  for advice is just done in the area where she lives or generally on the NHS? Perhaps someone on this site has experience of this.   I now know that specific hospital cannot be named but not sure about counties etc.

    Take care
