Polycythemia diagnosis

Hi, I have just been told I may have polycythemia. My blood results have a high level of red blood cells and have been consistently high for the past 4 years. I have other symptoms including exhaustion, bruising and pain/aches in legs. My Father, who passed away 7 years ago, also had this condition. I have been told by the gp to have a more detailed blood test in 8 weeks time to "gather evidence" so he can refer me to heamotology. I do not understand this decision given the symptoms, family history and record of bloods. Also, does this disorder not fall into the 2 week rule? I understand this is a rare condition but wondered if anyone had experience of this and could offer any advice? I feel overwhelmed with worry, considering the complications that can arise from having this. Many thanks in advance.

  • Hello Hats14,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

It seems your GP would need to get as much information before refering you on regardless of family history. The length of time for tests can differ, but to find out more about why it would take 8 weeks I'd suggest you contact your GP with any questions you have.

    Best wishes,
