milk duct removal

hi so after having test done as my nipple has been bleeding. i have to have my milk ducts removed. im very anxious and nervous. has anyone had this done. what’s the procedure and recovery like. is there pain?

  • Hi I have recently just read your post, that your operated breast is now smaller then the other one, I have had all milk ducts removed in my right breast and biopsy. On the 23rd October 2020 a few days after my operation I noticed the bandages were coming off obviosuly lost it's stick, I see my boob and it looks a really odd shape and about 2 cup sizes smaller than my left breast is this normal? Also the sensation around my nipple is like a burning sensation when touched, still feels a bit tender is this normal? Xx

  • Hi hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread but saw your question.  I had this op exactly 2 years ago.  I think you will find that the breast size may even up as the area excised 'fills in'.  I found I had a very small amount of tenderness for a year and then it was fine.  In actual fact visually I don't think you can even tell I had surgery.   If you have any other questions am happy to answer even though it's obviously only my own personal experience.

  • Hi :) no course not :)

my boob still hurts ( not agony but tender) I know it's only been 3 weeks since having the operation, I hope it sorts it self out I mean I'm not fussed if it looks different I'm just more intrigued why it's so much smaller, I've got the doctors tomorrow as I have a dressing on it at the moment due to it being so sensitive that I can't were a bra the pain sensitivity around and in my nipple I can't bare having anything rub on it, I noticed last night when I took the dressing off just to feel if it's sensitive still that there was blood on the dressing and that where the stitches are healing I've noticed a small tear in the wound, and it just keeps bleeding. X

  • Hi There....hope you're ok. When I had my op it was much the same. The nurse checked it and there was still a stitch there that needed taking out. Once she'd done that it healed fine. My wound was round the nipple area as well and you can't even see it now.

Be patient. Time really is a great healer in this......good luck....Irene xx

  • Hi

This all sounds completely normal to me.  I was quite worried too about shape and scars- thought it would be all deflated but it wasn't like that at all.  I usually wore wired bras but was advised to wear sports bras and this was more comfortable.  In actual fact I bought some of the crop top style bras that you just pull on (Morrisons and Tesco do them)- they were great as felt they held me in shape especially in bed.  I think everyone heals differently- I was definitely mildly tender for up to a year.

  • IV been told I need this too I waited to see GP for 6 weeks because of breast pain I actually had to insist that they look at my breasts I then got urgent appointment outwith my area she explained the procedure but I don't scar well and don't do good with anaesthesia either so not looking forward to it but thankful for our NHS

  • Hi, I do hope your op went well and that you're healing well too. You got booked in for your op in good time. I have also had scan, biopsy, mammogram with the decision made to remove the bleeding milk duct. This was back in between Dec 19 - March 20 and I'm still awaiting a date for the operation due to the affects of the pandemic. It's really not helping any anxiety waiting so long. I'm glad I found this thread though it's been very helpful.

    Thank you

  • Hi

I'm 2 weeks post OP..I had to have mine done due to the same reasons as you..i was in alot of pain after i woke up from the general anesthetic and I'm still abit sore now i get my biopsy results on the 15th June which will be 3weeks since i had the operation

Dont be scared you will be fine  Good luck and a speedy recovery

  • Were you affected emotionally after the op?

It's only been 6 days since my op and I have not had my biopsy results yet but I have a Dr's appointment to check the "wound" on Wednesday.
