Low grade fever for 3 weeks that isn't an infection

18/M

I've been suffering from a low grade fever of around 37.3C to 37.5C for the past few weeks.  I've been to a GP and at first he told me it was anxiety and gave me some meds. I didn't get much better so I went to the GP again, who gave me some different meds, and after taking those, everything but the fever was pretty much fixed, aside from some occasional aching and headaches. I went to the GP again today, and he tweaked the meds again, but still doesn't really know why I still have a fever.  I had a CBC blood test, and the results came out fine, and the GP says the blood test shows I don't have inflammation.

I've taken even more meds and the fever still hasn't broken yet, it hasn't gotten any worse or any better.  I also occasionally feel light headed, and my muscles often twitch, but that could be because of the medicine that's supposed to make you fatigued.

I'm getting really worried becuase I still don't know where the fever is coming from, all I know is it isn't from an infection, which is freaking me out even more because i'd rather get an infection since they're easy to treat.  I'm thinking that i've gotten cancer and I don't know what to do.  I don't know if I should schedule another appointment with the GP or like get a full body MRI scan to make sure I don't have any tumors.

  • Hi

i had a negative antibody test in May.  But back in mid December, I did have a 103 fever and horrible coughing for three weeks - worst I've felt in a long time.  I always thought that was COVID given that I was in NYC at the time, but it's still not been proven that it was around that early.

is your fever all day?  My temperature is normal in the day, 97.8 or so in the morning, and then spikes late afternoon or evening to 99.8-100F.

  • Hi all,

My normal body temperature used to be no higher than 35. However, 2 weeks ago I woke up with a high fever (38+), so booked myself a COVID test that day which came back negative. I had no other symptoms develop. After suffering badly with it a few days, I called my doctors and spoke with them to which they said to treat with painkillers - however this didn't help at all.

Last week my doctor checked me all over and couldn't see anything wrong so prescribed me a 5 day course of antibiotics to see if it would help...it didn't.

Called back today as temp is still no lower that 37.5 (no matter on the time of day, or if I'm active or not) so doctor has told me to wait until next Monday and if I still have the high temp (which will be day 22 of it), he's going to do bloods, urine and chest x-ray.

I only turned 25 last week and I have a 9 month old baby, and I'm really worried that there is something seriously wrong that is going untreated.

  • I have been going through the same... Low grade temperature 37.1-37.6 since mid September. What I would suggest to you all is to get your gp to send your urine to the lab not just do a dips tick. You might have a uti that is giving you temp without any other symptoms. This is most likely what has caused mine. Another one is blood test for autoimmune diseases. There are some that can cause temperature without any other symptoms. I am also seeing a rheumatologist now to see if this may be the cause an d having some further blood tests but most likely it's the bladder... Something to bear in mind.

  • Hey, I have been having the same symptoms!

So frustrating, it's been weeks  of this low grade fever and feeling exhausted with no solution.
seems  it may be a ' long COVID' thing but have tested negative every time. So strange

had blood, time and throat swab taken last week so waiting for results.
Has anyone heard of it being due to mould in the house? Just something someone mentioned to me...

  • Hi,

I have had low grade fever 37.7 - 38.2 for 6 weeks plus fatigue and muscle/joint aches.  Had huge rafts of blood tests including full blood count, and testing for all the viruses they can test for, plus CT scan of abdomen, chest x ray, urine test, and blood test for thyroid and rheumatoid markers. All negative.  I also had 3 covid tests plus antibody test, all negative.

I am off work as I am too fatigued to cope even though it is a desk job.

Not sure what to think or where to go from here.  I do feel anxious about my job and what will become of me.  I spend most of the day in bed but make myself get up each evening and just sit on the sofa for a few hours.

I have a further appt with GP (at my request) because I want answers.

Reassuring reading these posts as I was beginning to question my ear thermometer, although I do feel particularly unwell when my temp goes up, so I know it is right.

Let me know how you guys have been getting on.  Has it resolved itself, are you just working through it (ignoring it) or any suggestions as to what could be the cause, even if there is no definitive test for it?

    Cat

  • Dear all

i hope you will all find answers to your Persistent fever

I am also on the same boat with you

i think I have been having low grade fever since march

i said I think as I only started taking my temperature in March last year..

I usually wake up with 37 and it goes up to 37.5 and sometimes 37.7

i also have leg and arm pain and lower back pain

not too sure if it is connected but I am easily bruised too..

However My doctor did not connect them to each other

I had full blood test done all came back normal

Cat I am wondering how come your gp offered you all these test straight away even ct scan .

( I am glad all came normal for you btw)

my doctor does not concern much about it he only said to me I should not check my temperature if I am not feeling sick but I cannot help I keep checking it all the time

I am generally an anxious person and this fever effects my daily life badly

i think I ll call my gp and ask for referral not too a what do they need to check

  • Hello,

I've also had an on and off fever for almost 2 weeks now. The 1st week my temp spikes from 38-40° Celsius accompanied by sore throat. This week, my fever mostly appears during morning and it's around 38, but it will gradually come down in noon time. Ni sore throat right now as well. Ive done 3 covid pcrs and all came back negative, urine test is also normal. still waiting for the result of my blood tests.

It is really bothersome for i've always been calling in sick on workdays

  • Hello

ive just come across this website, my symptoms have been quite similar and I wondered how you were getting on. Have you had any answers yet?
this is my 4th week of feeling cold and clammy with a higher temp than usual. I did have an abscess and was put on a course of antibiotics. They cleared everything but my temp and clammy feeling. I don't have the shakes anymore etc. I had blood tests and two results came back abnormal on my liver function which need repeating but the gp wasn't concerned really, he said sometimes it's to do with diet. I then read that anxiety causes psychogenic fevers. Im not sure if anyone has heard of this or if it's true. Im driving myself crazy googling.

  • Hi Cat and all

I hope you are well now. I'm having exactly same symptoms. It's lasted for over 2 months now and is driving me carzy.

What was yours at the end? I'll be grateful if you tell me. This is causing me a lot of anxiety x

    Niki

  • Look up psychogenic fever.

Having read through this thread I see a common denominator is anxiety. I too have had a low grade fever of around 37.7 for months and no known cause. I also suffer from severe health anxiety and wondering also if this may be a cause. I googled it and came up with psychogenic fever.........really hoping that's the reason because it's stressing me out so much.
