Low grade fever for 3 weeks that isn't an infection

18/M

I've been suffering from a low grade fever of around 37.3C to 37.5C for the past few weeks.  I've been to a GP and at first he told me it was anxiety and gave me some meds. I didn't get much better so I went to the GP again, who gave me some different meds, and after taking those, everything but the fever was pretty much fixed, aside from some occasional aching and headaches. I went to the GP again today, and he tweaked the meds again, but still doesn't really know why I still have a fever.  I had a CBC blood test, and the results came out fine, and the GP says the blood test shows I don't have inflammation.

I've taken even more meds and the fever still hasn't broken yet, it hasn't gotten any worse or any better.  I also occasionally feel light headed, and my muscles often twitch, but that could be because of the medicine that's supposed to make you fatigued.

I'm getting really worried becuase I still don't know where the fever is coming from, all I know is it isn't from an infection, which is freaking me out even more because i'd rather get an infection since they're easy to treat.  I'm thinking that i've gotten cancer and I don't know what to do.  I don't know if I should schedule another appointment with the GP or like get a full body MRI scan to make sure I don't have any tumors.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your response. Mine never exceeds 37.7 but even in that I feel extremely feverish. I had urine test that came out normal and next week I have blood test. I am very worried as this feverish feeling is there from three weeks now and it doesn't go away. Temp gets lower at night but everyday I have this raised temperature. I just don't want this to be anything serious. Do you think it indicates to something serious?

  • Hey

hope you all got postive outcomes.

In a similar situation as you all. Initially I was tested for COVID 19 bit that came back negative and I was still isolating due to the high temperature. 14 days later my temperature was still high and my GP requested some simple bloods. All came back clear. However now on week 4 my temperature is still low grade fever. Due to my occupation I was signed off work and then my GP was happy for me to go back to work and said maybe I just have a higher than normal temperature.

However occupation health were not happy for me to return  to work and requested my GP for more investigation. Today I had a GP appointment ironically my temperature was within normal range and my BP ect was okay. He did an examination and found no lumps bumps. He cheated my chest and my breathing. Everything was fine.

I also get occasional headache and often feel light headed and nausea and have night sweats.

I have a urine sample to give next week and he has requested a chest X-ray. He did not want to repeat bloods and I had some two weeks ago. And he wanted to discuss my case with other GP at the surgery.

He mentioned that 50% of the cases they find no cause. 25% it’s an underlying infection and the rest I can’t remember as everything was a blur but he did mention malignancies and that has frightened the day light out of me.

Has anyone been referred to infection diseases consultant .

  • I dont know what to say just wait and see whay the gp says and see how ur bloods come back. Im still very worried as i would like to get more tests done as i dont know what can cause this fever. Also had chest xray and was fine.... keep us updated pls

how low does ur temp go at night? Just realised if i stay in bed even during the day and do nothing my temp will drop to 37.3/4 but as soon as i get up it goes to 37.7/8. Does that happen to you?

  • Hello had bloods chest x rat covid test all came bAck fine even urine sample. Gp said not to worry bit i feel that it is something. Im not sure what to ask my gp for...? Which referral.? Also sonetines i get hwadaches and lightheaded. How high is ur temp usually? My gp said to stop taking mine so often but i do get red face and i know i have a fever.. i usually use a ear one to check temp but if i check my oral temp usually shows lower...

  • Hey.. just voice your concern and say you are not happy and want it investigated further. This May initiation more bloods to be undertaken and other basic test to see if there in an underlying reason and then maybe the GP decided to refer yoi to a specialist who deals with infectious diseases. First week since I noticed it was 38 and now on average it’s 37.7 but it’s starting to drop but it still fluctuates. Does paracetamol lower your temperature

i think oral reading are lower than ear. I’m not too sure on that   But I think ear is best way.

  • Yes ill speak to my gp today again. If i take any paracetamol or nurofen doesn't take it down... how abt yours? X

  • Afternoon, aww let me know how it goes.

And in all honestly I only take paracetamol when it goes above 38 and tbh I never really noticed it going down. If it does it would go to 37.8

  • Hi

At night it sometimes drop to below 37 but most of the times its around 37.1-37.2 but as soon as I wake up and start doing work it goes up.

  • Hi

I hope you get well soon.what range is your temperature in?

  • Omg the same happens with me. I cant even cook as my temperature will go up and my face gets red.. does ur face get red too? Im trying to think maybe my baseline temp is 37.6 and when active it goes up to a low grade fever...
