Gastroscopy - sedation or not, my experience

As a 33 year old I was slightly anxious prior to my gastroscopy back in April (more afraid of the results than the procedure itself) however, even prior to seeing the nurse beforehand I had opted against sedation, and instead chose the throat spray. The nurse took my blood pressure and explained the procedure to me, outlining all required information before the procedure.

Approx 15 mins later I was taken into the ‘theatre’. The procedure commenced with a touch of throat spray, numbing the throat well, however, no pain or discomfort was felt. From there I was asked to lay on my left hand side whilst the staff prepared the equipment prior to the procedure. Next, the consultant asked me to swallow the camera, which expectedly felt slightly unusual for a split second (again no pain or discomfort). Once I had swallowed the camera I felt nothing as I watched the camera bypass my oesphagus, stomach and intestine, whilst taking biopsies. The procedure honestly felt like I was laid on a bed with a small lump in throat watching TV. No discomfort, and no pain. The procedure lasted approx 25 mins, recieved the report 10 minutes later then drove home.

The only odd feeling during the procedure was swallowing the camera, which was like swallowing a bit of food which you haven’t chewed properly.

For those who’re hesitant about this procedure, don’t be, there is no pain. I did, however, have great NHS staff looking after me.

I have a colonoscopy in 2 days so I’m carrying the positive experience from the gastroscopy into that!
