Random fevers, really worried

I have got myself worried sick from googling too much! (I have chronic health anxiety)

About 2 months ago I would randomly wake at night feeling shaky, nearly like I was too hot/cold at the same time. It was weird but only happened randomly so I never thought too much of it.

2 weeks ago I woke hot and sweaty and my temp was 38.2. I went to the doctor and she said my tonsils were swollen with puss on them and I def had tonsillitis (even though I had no throat pain) she put me on antibiotics. She took bloods and a throat swab. Bloods were normal and the swab was clear. Since then I dont see any puss on my throat and dont have any other symptoms apart from I keep getting random low grade fevers! I seem to go a few days with no fever then it comes back again, it makes me feel so uncomfortable and keeps me awake at night.

Of course google has scared me silly! I cant see a doctor for a few days and I'm trying to keep it together but its hard. Im currently on holiday with my kids and this is all I can think of. Everything I read online points to random fevers being a really bad sign. Has anyone experienced this? Im so scared :(

  • Do you have any other symtoms? I have fevers after doing little walking of 10 mins or housework of 39 sometimes 40 and when resting mostly 38 or 38.5. The only restbite i get is the mornings. My fever goes up throughout the day and seem to suffer in the night. I have excessive sweating due to the fevers. All my bloods are normal except slightly raised blood count and immflamatory markers were slightly raised not enough to indicate infection. Ive had urine cultures which negative. I feel tired constantly and i recently had a episode of chest pain which came on suddenly lasted about 10 mins. I have shooting pains in the neck and under arm on left side but no lumps tp be felt. I have had left sided flank pain since october thats where it all started. I had a week where i itched every where but after antihitamines i only itch on my neck all over now. No rash. Ive lost a dress size amd a half since october. Ive been by heamtology consultant who dismissed me because bloods were 'normal'. GP feels i am showing b symtoms of lymphoma. Hope it all gets sorted. I know this is scary but it could just be from the infection. It can stay in the system for a few weeks. Keep an eye on it. If you are getting ill more often and taking longer to get over the illness go to GP.

  • I dont have any other symptoms apart from the fever. I supposidly had tonsillitis 2 weeks ago even though my throat wasnt sore at all! I think the glands in my neck are up too. Im travelling home from holiday today and hope to get in with the doctor tomorrow! Are you checking your temperature constantly? I cant help but check mine all the time! Do you always have a temp or does it sometimes be normal? Mine was normal for a few days and now its up again. I feel drained constantly and nausous. Its stopping me sleeping as I wake up every hour feeling hot and sweaty. You must be going crazy with worry too! Are you managing to hold it together? Im really struggling :(

  • Hi I have been reading all your posts, nowhere did you state your age, Anyhow that’s not relevant yet. First of all I would definitely stay off google. Most of it is American unless you do put UK at the end. However you still get a lot of Americans sites. Back in 2002 my husband had almost similar symptoms to yourself, one day he came home from work. Very very unusual for him to ask if the doctors where still open. The last time my husband had been near a doctor was back in 1988. When he had his discharge medical after 22 years in the army. I looked at the time and said yes for another 15 mins. He asked me to phone them to see if they could squeeze him in while he changed out of a suit. Phone was answered straight the way. Just had I started to speak to them my husband got up and turned completely grey and had to sit down again. I explained this to receptionist, she asked me if I could get him down there now and Dr will be waiting. I thought it was his heart, we got to the Drs on examination Dr thought heart too. So he called paramedics. My husband said my wife’s got the car outside can she not take me in, Dr said no, so off he went with paramedics. Now I had 2 children to sort out. I asked a friend who our children where always playing together I had looked after theirs plenty of times. I gave them a key to the house. I didn’t know what time I would be back, my friend fed them I told her there was a fridge freeze and cupboards full of food. She fed my two at her house while she fed her own I got to hospital to find my husband sat up fine still in A&E he said they had given him some meds to see if he responded to anything. He told me they would be keeping overnight. To monitor him. Cutting a long winded story. After numerous test and having told them he’d been suffering from a load grade fever on and off for a long time. His white blood cells where slightly up. Eventually he came home next day with the all clear with a appointment to see hemstologist and a heart dr it was just white cells elevated, the white blood cells only elevat when fighting a infection or a virus. He was told not to return to work until everything or at least until the consultant had some answers. After 3 and a half years later still white bloods cells raided still having low grade fever. Still not retuned to work, fortunately for us we didn’t have a mortgage exeopt for £1 littraly we bought the house outright. However my mortgage many many years before was with Nationwide, it was paid off on the death of my fist spouse following a car accident, when I married again although we paid cash, my 2nd husband bought into the property with a massive lump sum he received from on his leaving after 22 years so was also entitled to full milatry pension once he reached 55. So we in one respect not having a mortgage had the time for the 3 years or so to pass, each time he went he had slight raised white cells they never where normal. After anothe 6 months my husband had said he was board stupid and he had been chatting to the headmaster at our local school when he went to collect out daughter then went to the other school to collect out son. He was saying my daughters headmaster told him he was after a new caretaker for the school. Because he knew my husband was ex military he asked my husband if he might be interested. Anyhow he told him the only reason he was not st work was the hospital where still trying to get to the bottom of his symptoms of a low grade fever and his white blood cells having constantly raided all that timr. Next time he went back hospital he told the consultant that he had got himself a different job and was going to go back to work things had gone on long enough he didn’t want to have packed in his previous job so no he’s taking the other job. Now talk about angry. All that time and the consultant said all we can put it down too was different viruses. That was causing the low grade fever and his white blood cells elevated. Apparently we have approximately over 2 million different virus in this country, that was back in 2005 so how many more now god only knows l am praying that’s all it is for you something like viruses that making you feel the way you do and not any type of lymphoma or cancers at all, I wish you well and your friend you have been chatting to for awhile. The lady who on your last couple of messages who was waiting for results of a ultrasound scan. Regarding Google yes I don’t doubt it’s good and can answer a lot of questions. Regarding medical ones I personally wouldn’t trust a lot of them, this is coming from someone who had had severe depression and anxiety attacks. They are well under control. However on reading a few medical questions on google. I noticed that it could possibly start people worrying uneccerely with there are so many illnesses out their that your symptoms can be a number of things that point to mild to serious, I just find google medical have a answer to so many illnesses symptoms that differ from America to the uk so we could all make the symptoms fit to almost any illness, now with you actually saying you have anxiety over health, it’s what’s making you worry. Anyhow I am interested to know how you and your friend musicmylife, is all I can see regarding her name, I am pulling for you both and very much would appreciate it if either of you two ladies get on. Oh just one more thing I had my tonsils taken out at 29 sometimes I didn’t have pain my temperature shot really high that was making me feel so ill, I can not spell this, but I will give it a go. There’s a throat infection you can get, it’s related to the stypticociouses virus. It’s extremely nasty you get this yellow phlegm on the tonsils with it sometimes. I was told that was the cause of my tonsillitis. I had no choice to have had them out. Now we all carry the virus it’s whether it triggers, in some people it never does. It’s responsible for a few different illnesses. It’s nick name regarding tonsillitis is strep throat. You can have it sometimes with no coating on your tonsils a mild attack that doesn’t hurt, or you can have major attacks which lead to people having to have tonsils out, the virus lives in everyone’s nose. So I wish you all the look in the world and same to musicinmylife. Do please keep me updated, ladies I am really interested in both cases. Love Marj xx

  • Hi Marj, thank you so much for such a long and thoughtful message! What happened your husband in the end, did his temp eventually go back to normal? The only concern I have is that my bloods dont point torwards infection. They dont point towards anything! Its interesting you say about about having tonsillitis with no pain. My doctor did swab me for strep and it was negative though :(

You are right about google. I need to be stronger against searching on it. Its just so easy to do! But I'm letting my anxiety take control when I do that so I have to stop as it takes me to a really bad place mentally. You asked my age, I'm 33 :)

Interesting about viruses and how many there are! Did your husband have any symptoms of having a virus or was he like me with mainly only the fever? I had none last night thankfully and I slept good. Did his come and go or was it constant?

  • Hi babe, I am glad you where I tested in my message my husband just kept saying he felt a tad unwell which he put down mainly to tiredness. The day he turned grey and I and doctors thought it was his heart. Later on he sad he had no pain he just came over a little dizzy. Again he put it down to being tired. With his job he would be one place for so many months then when they started the next faze it could be anywhere in the country, they did try to keep him and others nearer to home than trying to make them travel. After the last phase had finished which was on our doorstep. He started having to travel a about a hour away just over to get there and same to get back. One thing he used to do, actually still does his snoring almost cost him his marriage it was so mad that I literally. Was going to divorce him, he was causing me not to sleep, the times I went downstairs to sleep and I still could hear him  it was driving me to a point of being so tired myself, now this is coming from someone who has never neede a lot of sleep in my life 3/4 hours usually was more than enough. I told him if he didn’t go and get something done about it I would literally have no choice but to kick him out and divorce him. I know a lot of people would laugh at that. To be honest I would have at one time, it’s only having lived with someone who is keeping you awake all night after night for years it does get to a point where you can not take anymore lack of sleep yourself, sleep deprivation can have such a horrendous affect on your life, you actually think your going mad. He kept saying he would but it took years for him to actually go to doctors about it . During those time he used to wake himself up numerous times in the night yet he had no memory of it himself. So All in all he was genuinely so tired himself through it. So him putting things down to tiredness I fully understood. So no not really he had no other symptoms. None that could actually say why he kept running a low grade fever on and off, it was a really strange period in our lives. He couldn’t understand it, I was so tired at one point I didn’t try to understand it. I do know lack of sleep can cause strange things to happen to the body. So with his job we had private medical insurance. In the end he went to see about his snoring hopefully killing two birds with one stone. Allowing us to sleep and hopefully it was related to sleeping. Why he snores so badly he had served in the military for 22yers with him being posted to Northern Ireland during the troubles he’d had his nose broken quite w few times, a nerve was trapped between two very soft bones that he could no breath properly when asleep. In true when he was awake either yet it never showed when he was awake, cutting a long story short The sorted the nerve out etc cut some cartilage away suddenly after he heals no more snoring. Yet typical man he hardly ever went doctor so he just basically lived with these low grade fevers until that day he came home from work saying he felt a little unwell, I had stopped mentioning doctors by now, you can only suggest so much over the years, plus he had started snoring again, he was told years before after the op it might come back, it wasn’t has bad. Had he not gone a bit grey that day I doubt he would have ever gone doctors so as I said in my last message he was whizzed if to hospital thinking it was his heart. When he was asked if he fancied the job as school caretaker. When he saw the consultant again he said for 3 years he had, been having this problem with his white cells yet no nearer to finding out why, so he told the consultant he was going back to work, he stayed under the consultant for a further few years until the consultant said basically he was or had still got a virus, it may not be in fact most unlikely be the same one that he first ended up in hospital for, that’s when he was told there was over 2 million types of viruses in this country. Because antibiotics didn’t not have a affect on viruses they could continue to see why he kept getting them or more or less live with it. He said he would live with it, so yes he’s continuing to get low grade fevers most of the time, it does go never for long. No one knows why, only downside is now he’s a lot older. He sometimes becomes ill but refuse to go doctors because he just says it’s a virus. Although now he’s retired also a big risk to stomach cancer. His dad and younger sister died in there fifties of stomach cancer.  He’s been advised to get himself checked. No still not done it. Now he uses the excuse that because I have matestetic lung cancer, terminal. I have days where I am bed ridden because of it, it’s becoming more often I ave oxygen st home etc, I was 54 when diagnosed with a prognosis of 6/8 months this was back in 2013 no one actually can answer why I am still alive I am supposed to have died yet here I still am. You are so young sweetheart to be going through this, as anyone ever suggested a PET SCAN. If not I know in your position I would start asking about one. Then again you never really hear of them until you have been more or less diagnosed with cancer. A pet scan can detect cancer in any part of the body except spine if my memory serves me well. It’s a ingection of a small amount of radiation with a surgery substance that’s given through a IV line, you have to try and not move for a hour, then they Scan you. Cancer lives of the sugar in our bodies, Mia that with the radiation once scan has been seen if anywhere that glows then it cancer, it can detect cancer well before any human eye can. I have had two. I know the cost of one is enormous. I have this Theroy that with all other tests consultations eye, eventually the cost mounts up, that sometimes a PET scan can work out cheaper. Also despite they could see some tumours on my lungs I still had to have a pet scan, where they whee 99.5% I had cancer, after pet scan I had biopsy to confirm it was cancer, I believe I had the first pet scan to see exactly where the cancers where, obviously not the bigger ones, the possible smaller ones they couldn’t see. On my second one, it showed loads and loads of smaller tumours growing on both lungs, yet they could only see a few. I did have the biggest part of my left lung out on original diagnosis. The two tumours in that upper lobe where quite big. I didn’t have any symptoms. It was only because I thought I had cut the back of my throat strumming the lawn that I started coughing up blood that went on for months. I went doctor to have a couple of stitches put in. Oops did not expect in a million years but it was the big C anyhow I best go now I takes you to death, do start making enquires about a PET scan, do let me know how you are, and how things progress please. Bye for now Marj xx

  • Yes i have scarring on top quarter of my left kidney and the pipe going to my kidney so i hope its a kidney infection i can be treated and get better

  • Hi Marj, I'm so sorry for all you are going through! It is so kind of you to take the time to help others when you have so much going on in your own life. My mum also has metastatic  cancer but at the minute she is "stable" and is scanned every 3 months.

I cant stand snoring either haha! Isnt it the worst! My partner snores too, I always shake him and get him to turn over so he stops for a bit and I can get back to sleep lol!

Im sorry your husband still suffers fevers and has had no answers. Can I ask how high his temp goes or is it only low grade fevers? Mine are low grade it happens mainly at night time. I dont think they would give me a PET scan, I also dont work at present so couldnt afford to pay for one. I will have to see what hemotology say, I'm just really hoping this goes away in the meantime amd that it is just some kind of virus!

  • First let me apologise for not getting back sooner, however I was and still am very unwell. My husbands temperature only goes up one degree. His normal temp is 37.5 where as mine is 36.5 so his goes to either 38 or 38.5 that’s it no higher. I am sorry to hear about your mum darling. Where as your mum got cancer is it breast. I don’t know why nearly everyone assumes it’s breast cancer with women. Now regarding you having a pet scan I would agree about cost even if you had that sort of money. However if they think you may have some form of cancer it’s actually worth asking about one. It’s rare they just give them as a matter of course due to cost. I just happen to live in a area my oncologist will and does order them in many cases. Now I do not know why he does however he does. Has I said I have had 2. My philosophy is if they thought theirs a possibility of cancer then surely just do a PET SCAN by doing that it can safe money by not having to have content tests. Eventually I do think long term it would even out with costs. It really annoys me. Because it does seem to matter where you live, it’s down to the postcode lottery again. Where I live I am eligible to attend 3 counties for treatment and A&E now it’s the truth I border the 3 counties hence eligiblebilty I live in Leicestershire bordering on Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire. I can not name the hospital I do attend or my oncologists name, it’s not allowed. I do understand why though.. I have a brilliant oncologist and would be proud to let everyone know who he was. But then again I suppose it’s better for him in the long tun

anyhow I will leave you for now, sorry I seem rushed it’s justvwith not feeling well that’s all. If there’s anything else you wish to ask me please feel free. Also do let me know how you are coping and your mum. I might be a little slow at the moment to get back to you, so please bare with me

    love Marj xxxx

  • Hi Marj, I am so sorry you are unwell. It is more than kind of you to spend time in this group helping others when you are so unwell yourself. Please spend time looking after yourself and dont worry about replying to me! Yes my mum has breast cancer, its inflammatory breast cancer. She got scan results today and everything is still stable so she will be scanned again in 3 months.

I'm not doing too bad right now. My temp is normal for most of the day now, around 37. Some evenings it goes up to 37.6 then back to normal. Last night it went up in the middle of the night and I found it hard to sleep. Apart from that things are ok and I'm not as anxious about it

  • Hi, first of all don’t worry about me. Sorry it’s taken me a few days to get back to you. I only realised tonight I don’t know your name. I wrote after I had read some of your messages with music lover. It’s when I first wrote and told you about my husband having had suffered with low grade temperatures. Anyhow I am sorry to hear it is breast cancer with your mum. Although it’s good to know she’s still stable, and hopefully it will stay that way for a very very long time. I was also pleased to hear you had been feeling a little better. I can not imagine how you felt not being able to sleep when your temperature went up in the night. I know some people say I understand because of.......... That to me is one of the most annoying statements I hear. Under normal circumstances I used to have insomnia but in truth until I became ill I never seemed to need a lot of sleep. I also no one has any idea how other people are feeling until they are actually in that situation themselves. I know after my first husband was killed in the car accident. I just remember some saying I know how you are feeling because I lost my sister in law in a car accident. I didn’t say anything only because I know I can go a bit over the top. So I thought it was best to keep quiet. When I say go over the top, what I mean by that is sometimes I can say things before my brain gets into gear. I might say something hurtful so that’s why I decided to stay quite. I know I was thinking actually there’s no comparison to losing a sister in law to a husband. Because they love we have for people are in different scales and different types. Someone said to lose a spouse is the biggest loss you could suffer. Now although I was only 29 he was 32 when he died. I thought my whole world had come to a end. Yet even though I was feeling totally devastated and my life had almost ended, I turned round to the person who had said it. I said no not the biggest loss, if it had have been one of my children then I wouldn’t be thinking my life was almost over. I would be saying my life is over. I think that’s the biggest loss anyone could go through. So although I could say I understand how you felt I don’t know I and others never will. Even though I had insomnia. It’s still diffident to what your going through. That’s if you understand what I am trying to say. I can waffle for England when I am feeling a little bit better. Anyhow I am just going to leave you tonight with this. First ask for a PET SCAN.

secondly this is for your mum. I was given a prognosis of 6/8 months back in 2013 yet I am still here. No one knows why but I am. Tell her to keep her chin up and I hope she continues to stay strong and stable. Ok

    love marj xx

  • Hi Marj58,

I am fascinated and heartened by reading your story about defying the odds........long may it continue!

I’m wondering what your initial symptoms were and how long before you were finally diagnosed?

My concern revolves around a chronic cough I’ve had for nearly two months coupled with a stiff neck and mild back pain........and chronic tinnitus since the end of April. I should get chest CT results some time next week, the X-ray a month ago showed some inflammation and atelectasis in the lower left lobe.

Sorry about the thread hijack by the way!

    Dave

  • Hi Dave, no problem you didn’t hijack at all. My post is for anyone who wants to chat, ask question whatever they need to chat about. I didn’t actually have any symptoms or so I thought at the time. However looking back I know see that there were a few. Yet none led me to even think cancer. I was visiting a friend in Coventry at the time. She had mowed her lawn whilst I strimmed. Something flew into my mouth. We all have something called gag instincts. Where anything in the back of your throat makes you cough. I stated coughing, I coughed so much I brought some blood up. I was not concerned I just assumed I had nicked the back of my throat. I continued to cough up blood for almost 3 months. Now I paid another visit to my friend in Coventry. This night she needed to see a doctor, we visited the walk in center whilst I was there this coughing up blood I decided to see a doctor to the possibility of having a few stitches. Cutting a extremely long story short I ended up at hospital. The feast of the story is so long, and what happened that night was so bizarre I thought I had landed on Mars it somewhere. I will not tell you tonight. If anything I would prefer privet message. Only because something on this public forum you can’t say. So do not be surprised if the hospital name is removed. Eventually when I got home I visited my own GP for stitches. I know some people would think why did I not see someone before 3 months. I just used logic every time I coughed I kept opening up the cut. That’s the logical reason. When I went to my GP I was asked a lot of questions. He told me he was making me a fast track appointment at the lung clinic. At that time I thought it was a bit ridiculous to be fair I was still sure I had cut the back of my throat. Everything was done so quickly it wasn’t long before they told me I had lung cancer. I know this will seem strange to some people. I just said never mind s...t happens. I am sure they thought I was in denial but actually I wasn’t it’s just my way. I was asked to spend time with Macmillan. I said I was going after 10 mins I need to go shopping l. I really did get some strange looks. What I actually did was go get a coffee. I sat down and then I did my thinking. I looked back for anything obvious that might have been a indication. It was only then I perhaps had a few tell tail signs. On and off for over a year I woke up feeling a little unwell, as if I was running a temperature. Feeling shivery yet at no time did I have a temperature. Truthful I am definitely not trying to scare you. I did have on and off some pain in my neck which I put down to sleeping funny. It get coming and going. So I took a pillow away, no it kept happening is if I had cricked my neck. I had already had a couple of minor chest infections. That soon cleared up with antibiotics. The actual week leading up to me seeing a doctor, in fact it may have been a couple of weeks. I just kept getting up feeling a bit tired than normal. No one knew why for just over a year I was getting up feeling like I was running a temperature and slightly unwell. My bloods did show a increase of the white blood cells. As I am sure you know when they go up it’s a sign your fighting a infection of some type. Drs put it down to a virus. So a few weeks as I was saying prior to diagnosis I just assumed here we go again. Went shopping with my friend Zoe. Who I just happened to say a couple of days prior to going to the walk in centre. That this time this virus is taking its timr to go. It was the day after I had this bizarre experience in Coventry. For the first time ever I took myself to bed in the afternoon for a couple of hours. The cough I had. I thought was going to turn into a chest infection but it didn’t, just remained a cough. I also had lower back pain. That I had no concerns about. Years prior I had slipped and put a couple of discs out. They wanted me to stay in hospital for 10 weeks in traction. Which was a joke. With 3 young children and my husband at work I said no a chance. They said I would suffer on and off for the rest of my life.being honest I very rarely had problems with my back, in the 22 years I had put the dics out. I just remember the odd time where I perhaps turned wrong. Or lifted something really heavy without bending the knees. So again being at my friends her mattress on the spare bed wasn’t as firm as I was used too. So every little warning signs that where there. I had something to say it’s because of  so and so. That is if they actually where warning signs. I now actually believe a couple where. Like feeling I had a virus that didn’t really want to go, plus each time I had that feeling of a virus. It just seemed each time we’re taking longer to go. The neck pain. By removing pillows didn’t seem to ease it any. The cough that didn’t develop into a chest infection. When you put them altogether I still honest to god never considered cancer. Not once. Apart from the white blood cells bring high on a few occasions. Nothing absolutely none of them made me feel it was anything at all serious. You know what not even coughing up blood. I am not a unintelligent person. Yet logically what I said with a cough and bringing blood up, because it coincided with something hard flying into the back of the throat it would take its time to heal. Especially coughing would keep opening any healing that was happening. As it transpired what the coughing had done. When whatever I had flat into my throat I coughed so much I had burst a tumour in my lungs. I had a bigger one also with a couple of smaller ones. Now why I wasn’t coming up more blood than I was I do not know. Even my xrays saw something but the lung spealist didn’t think it was serious. I found out a couple of weeks later his main reason for sending me for a CT scan. Back in the May 5 months previously. One of my younger brothers came back if holiday and the day he came back. He ended up the the heart until at the same hospital. His organs was starting to close down. He had so much water around his heart, it was only quick thinking of the doctor on the heart unit even though my brother was awake the put drains in him without anything to help the pain they didn’t have time. They where draining of the fluid, then they put another drain into his lung his left lung was also filled with water again while my brother was awake. On further investigation as to why and what was going off. The doctor who sent me for a CT scan he diagnosed my bother with terminal cancer in 24 hours of going into hospital with everything closing down. That came as such a massive shock because no history of cancer ever been heard of in either side of the family. It was only when he asked me if their was any history of cancer. I told him what had happened that night back in May. It literally was pure luck I just mentioned it was at the heart unit at the very same hospital I was at. He asked me his name. Yes even with my brother having been diagnosed with cancer back in May it still never crossed my mind not at all. It transpired him that sent me for a CT was the same lung doctor that had to tell my brother he was terminal. I didn’t see him again when I got called in early to discuss my CT results. I saw a different doctor. It was her that told me I had cancer. Just needed a biops and PET scan to be 100% sure. Although she was 98% certain. Anyhow Dave I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. Now you do not have to accept it but I am going to send you a friend request. I am doing that because I want you to keep me informed of your results. Also if you need anything to say. Which you will need someone to talk too. At least you can swear steam whatever in a private message. Being truthful. With so much getting taken out of a public forum. Like names of hospitals, names of consultants, many other thing. Even things you want to say and do not mind telling one person but not the entire forum it’s all then done by private messages. I will be honest. I will not name names but a couple of us are sending private messages now. Ok. It’s up to you. All I will say is I am always here if you want to chat. Sometimes you may have to wait a couple of days if I am not feeling good though. Ok I can’t say more than that. Good luck and I am thinking of you. Please do let me know the results of your CT etc lots of love and best wishes

  • Thanks Marj.

That detailed story won’t just prove useful to me, but also many others that use this site wondering how serious  their symptoms could be. Hopefully, it will prompt people to get themselves checked out.

I’ve been under the weather all year since an operation on the 4th January and there has been one thing after another. But I seek solace in the clear chest X-ray in April such that anything sinister ‘might’ be less advanced if they find anything on the CT scan. Touch wood, I’ve not coughed up any blood so far.

Keep soldiering on........here’s to another 6 years

  • Hi dave, how are you? Are you still getting raised temps? Have you had your ct scan yet?

Marj, you really have been through so much. I hope you get through this rough patch and start to feel better soon. I will pray for you!

My anxiety is quite bad today. I found a lump in my neck last night. It is quite hard and I cant tell how big it is as it goes deep into my neck. This has heightened my anxiety so much and deepened my fears that I have something serious wrong :(

About the fevers, my friend was telling me to use an oral thermometer as an ear one isnt as reliable. Especially when I'm taking my temp in the middle of the night and lying on my ear. So last night I woke up hot and sweaty. The ear thermometer said my temp was 37.5. But the oral one said it was perfect at 37! So maybe I'm not throwing as many fevers as I think I am. Im gunna keep checking on the oral one now...

  • Hi Smoore921,

The usual pattern (groundhog day) continues unabated:

I awake in the morning with a back ache and stiff neck but breathing normally with slight rales on inhaling.

Get up and begin to cough when I shower.

Cough is mostly dry, but when I clear my throat it isn’t.

Cough subsides in the morning but returns around lunchtime and worsens until I lie down or slouch on the bed in the evening.

Daytime temperature feels raised (face and neck), but back pain eases.

Sweat a bit at night too, but not the past semi-drenching sweats when I wake up (which I had in April).

    .......and repeat.

The CT scan was slick and the radiologist was very professional and informative. She said it’ll be 7 days or more before I’m contacted about an appointment to discuss the results.

There is something wrong with my lungs, but I am clinging on to the fact that there were no shadows or pleural effusion on my x-ray a month ago, I am not coughing blood and I have ‘form’ in that I have bronchiectasis, post nasal drip and a hiatus hernia. So the problem might not be immediately life threatening. I say ‘immediately’ as bronchiectasis can become serious if not managed and the silent reflux could cause lung or esophagus cancer in later life if not managed.

If your sweats aren’t drenching, you may just be fighting a virus. Lymphoma night sweats are supposedly quite distinctive.

Try to relax (says the bloke dreading scan results).

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • Hi Dave, sorry for the late reply but I try not to come on here as often as it makes me more anxious! Im still waiting to see hematology and still getting low grade fevers in my sleep. Just trying to get on with it as I wait to see a specialist!

Have you received your CT results yet? I hope you have got good news!

  • Hi,

Not received the results yet. Chased it up yesterday but the secretary dealing directly with my case is on leave until next week. However, a colleague of hers looked me up on the system and claimed a letter was drafted on the 9th August and ‘could’ be on it’s way in the post. She wasn’t allowed to read it out over the telephone to me, but said I would be referred on to a Chronic Cough Specialist and a bronchoscopy has not been requested. From that, I assume it’s not a clear-cut case and if it was an emergency, a bronchoscopy might well have been requested, but it’s all just guesswork really and I won’t count my chickens until I see the full letter.

Meanwhile, the cough is less severe but mucus production seems to be at an all time high.......sorry if you’re having your lunch whilst reading this!!

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • Received a brief letter today which stated that the CT result echoes that seem previously on the x-ray, I.e. mild bronchiectasis and basal atelectasis (probably resulting from recent respiratory infection). It also stated that blood test results weren’t yet complete but there were signs so far of Haemophilus influenzae, a type of bacteria that can cause many different kinds of infections including pneumonia. It recommends I have a vaccination.

I also received a text pointing me to a referral letter on the NHS on-line portal which stated that I have an appointment with a chronic cough specialist on 28th January 2020 (!)

Although I am obviously relieved that the CT scan seemingly hasn’t shown anything immediately life threatening such that a swift follow-up is not required, I am not going to suffer these symptoms all the way to January before I get a chance to address the problems, no way. Sorry if that sounds impatient!

So, tomorrow I will be calling the telephone number to try to bring the appointment forward.

Hope your fevers finally relent soon - try to stay positive if you can.

  • Hi Dave,

I'm glad they aren't overly concerned but I agree that January is a long wait!! I can only imagine how frustrating your symptoms and constant cough is! Let me know if you are able to bring it forward!

  • Brought forward.........to December. Best they can offer.

They said to ring up every week to see if there’s been a cancellation. I’ve left a message on with the respiratory specialist’s secretary requesting a brief telephone consultation to explain my CT results to me in plain English!

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • I recieved a letter today also from heamtology stating my bloods and xray are all normal but ultrasound picked up some scaring to my left kidney. My bloods show no infection and therefore they dont know where the scaring came from as per other symtoms i had as this only explained my left flank pain and hip pain, they said my temps are caused by hormonal chages throughout the month and probabal infections ive had over the year. My chest pain are panic attacks the itching is allergies and other aches and pains including weight loss and confusion is fibromialgia. I got alot of health issues so it seems and im being discharged back to GP!!! Surley it cant be coincice i have all these conditions at the same time!

  • Dave I hope they call you and discuss your results properly so you can understand exactly what is going on.

Musicismylife, Im sorry you have so much going on with no proper answer! What tests did you have done? Are you still getting all these symptoms now?

I feel like Im getting worse. Aswell as the fevers at night Im waking up shivering constantly. I also feel cold all day and cant warm up at all! Iv been getting a few weird spots that start like hives but then turn into purple blotches under my skin. After googling this im worried sick again! Still waiting to see hemotology :(
