Random fevers, really worried

I have got myself worried sick from googling too much! (I have chronic health anxiety)

About 2 months ago I would randomly wake at night feeling shaky, nearly like I was too hot/cold at the same time. It was weird but only happened randomly so I never thought too much of it.

2 weeks ago I woke hot and sweaty and my temp was 38.2. I went to the doctor and she said my tonsils were swollen with puss on them and I def had tonsillitis (even though I had no throat pain) she put me on antibiotics. She took bloods and a throat swab. Bloods were normal and the swab was clear. Since then I dont see any puss on my throat and dont have any other symptoms apart from I keep getting random low grade fevers! I seem to go a few days with no fever then it comes back again, it makes me feel so uncomfortable and keeps me awake at night.

Of course google has scared me silly! I cant see a doctor for a few days and I'm trying to keep it together but its hard. Im currently on holiday with my kids and this is all I can think of. Everything I read online points to random fevers being a really bad sign. Has anyone experienced this? Im so scared :(

  • Yes not urgent urgent as would bw 2 week wait (cancer check) but yes probably on urgent case load. My ultrasound did show something :) i have scaring of the left kidney upper part as the pipe with kidney atrached. They said kidney infection or something to do with my kidney for sure. My left side is where ive been getting pain and i have blood in my urine but no uti do makes sense.

  • Ah ok so would this explain alot of your symptoms then? What are they going to do next for you?

  • Sending email to my consultant hes waiting on bloods and then will probably refer to kidney specialist drs to investigate. Hopefully some antibiotics and ill be ok. Heres hoping :)

  • Fingers crossed for you! You've had a tough time of it, hopefully this will be it sorted! Keep us updated :)

  • Hope your diagnosis isnt lymphoma.

  • Thanks! Me too! Its an anxious time waiting and not knowin whats going on :(

I bet when you get on the right antibiotics your symptoms will go away! Glad you have finally some sort of answer x

  • Hi I have been reading all your posts, nowhere did you state your age, Anyhow that’s not relevant yet. First of all I would definitely stay off google. Most of it is American unless you do put UK at the end. However you still get a lot of Americans sites. Back in 2002 my husband had almost similar symptoms to yourself, one day he came home from work. Very very unusual for him to ask if the doctors where still open. The last time my husband had been near a doctor was back in 1988. When he had his discharge medical after 22 years in the army. I looked at the time and said yes for another 15 mins. He asked me to phone them to see if they could squeeze him in while he changed out of a suit. Phone was answered straight the way. Just had I started to speak to them my husband got up and turned completely grey and had to sit down again. I explained this to receptionist, she asked me if I could get him down there now and Dr will be waiting. I thought it was his heart, we got to the Drs on examination Dr thought heart too. So he called paramedics. My husband said my wife’s got the car outside can she not take me in, Dr said no, so off he went with paramedics. Now I had 2 children to sort out. I asked a friend who our children where always playing together I had looked after theirs plenty of times. I gave them a key to the house. I didn’t know what time I would be back, my friend fed them I told her there was a fridge freeze and cupboards full of food. She fed my two at her house while she fed her own I got to hospital to find my husband sat up fine still in A&E he said they had given him some meds to see if he responded to anything. He told me they would be keeping overnight. To monitor him. Cutting a long winded story. After numerous test and having told them he’d been suffering from a load grade fever on and off for a long time. His white blood cells where slightly up. Eventually he came home next day with the all clear with a appointment to see hemstologist and a heart dr it was just white cells elevated, the white blood cells only elevat when fighting a infection or a virus. He was told not to return to work until everything or at least until the consultant had some answers. After 3 and a half years later still white bloods cells raided still having low grade fever. Still not retuned to work, fortunately for us we didn’t have a mortgage exeopt for £1 littraly we bought the house outright. However my mortgage many many years before was with Nationwide, it was paid off on the death of my fist spouse following a car accident, when I married again although we paid cash, my 2nd husband bought into the property with a massive lump sum he received from on his leaving after 22 years so was also entitled to full milatry pension once he reached 55. So we in one respect not having a mortgage had the time for the 3 years or so to pass, each time he went he had slight raised white cells they never where normal. After anothe 6 months my husband had said he was board stupid and he had been chatting to the headmaster at our local school when he went to collect out daughter then went to the other school to collect out son. He was saying my daughters headmaster told him he was after a new caretaker for the school. Because he knew my husband was ex military he asked my husband if he might be interested. Anyhow he told him the only reason he was not st work was the hospital where still trying to get to the bottom of his symptoms of a low grade fever and his white blood cells having constantly raided all that timr. Next time he went back hospital he told the consultant that he had got himself a different job and was going to go back to work things had gone on long enough he didn’t want to have packed in his previous job so no he’s taking the other job. Now talk about angry. All that time and the consultant said all we can put it down too was different viruses. That was causing the low grade fever and his white blood cells elevated. Apparently we have approximately over 2 million different virus in this country, that was back in 2005 so how many more now god only knows l am praying that’s all it is for you something like viruses that making you feel the way you do and not any type of lymphoma or cancers at all, I wish you well and your friend you have been chatting to for awhile. The lady who on your last couple of messages who was waiting for results of a ultrasound scan. Regarding Google yes I don’t doubt it’s good and can answer a lot of questions. Regarding medical ones I personally wouldn’t trust a lot of them, this is coming from someone who had had severe depression and anxiety attacks. They are well under control. However on reading a few medical questions on google. I noticed that it could possibly start people worrying uneccerely with there are so many illnesses out their that your symptoms can be a number of things that point to mild to serious, I just find google medical have a answer to so many illnesses symptoms that differ from America to the uk so we could all make the symptoms fit to almost any illness, now with you actually saying you have anxiety over health, it’s what’s making you worry. Anyhow I am interested to know how you and your friend musicmylife, is all I can see regarding her name, I am pulling for you both and very much would appreciate it if either of you two ladies get on. Oh just one more thing I had my tonsils taken out at 29 sometimes I didn’t have pain my temperature shot really high that was making me feel so ill, I can not spell this, but I will give it a go. There’s a throat infection you can get, it’s related to the stypticociouses virus. It’s extremely nasty you get this yellow phlegm on the tonsils with it sometimes. I was told that was the cause of my tonsillitis. I had no choice to have had them out. Now we all carry the virus it’s whether it triggers, in some people it never does. It’s responsible for a few different illnesses. It’s nick name regarding tonsillitis is strep throat. You can have it sometimes with no coating on your tonsils a mild attack that doesn’t hurt, or you can have major attacks which lead to people having to have tonsils out, the virus lives in everyone’s nose. So I wish you all the look in the world and same to musicinmylife. Do please keep me updated, ladies I am really interested in both cases. Love Marj xx

  • Hi Marj, thank you so much for such a long and thoughtful message! What happened your husband in the end, did his temp eventually go back to normal? The only concern I have is that my bloods dont point torwards infection. They dont point towards anything! Its interesting you say about about having tonsillitis with no pain. My doctor did swab me for strep and it was negative though :(

You are right about google. I need to be stronger against searching on it. Its just so easy to do! But I'm letting my anxiety take control when I do that so I have to stop as it takes me to a really bad place mentally. You asked my age, I'm 33 :)

Interesting about viruses and how many there are! Did your husband have any symptoms of having a virus or was he like me with mainly only the fever? I had none last night thankfully and I slept good. Did his come and go or was it constant?

  • Hi babe, I am glad you where I tested in my message my husband just kept saying he felt a tad unwell which he put down mainly to tiredness. The day he turned grey and I and doctors thought it was his heart. Later on he sad he had no pain he just came over a little dizzy. Again he put it down to being tired. With his job he would be one place for so many months then when they started the next faze it could be anywhere in the country, they did try to keep him and others nearer to home than trying to make them travel. After the last phase had finished which was on our doorstep. He started having to travel a about a hour away just over to get there and same to get back. One thing he used to do, actually still does his snoring almost cost him his marriage it was so mad that I literally. Was going to divorce him, he was causing me not to sleep, the times I went downstairs to sleep and I still could hear him  it was driving me to a point of being so tired myself, now this is coming from someone who has never neede a lot of sleep in my life 3/4 hours usually was more than enough. I told him if he didn’t go and get something done about it I would literally have no choice but to kick him out and divorce him. I know a lot of people would laugh at that. To be honest I would have at one time, it’s only having lived with someone who is keeping you awake all night after night for years it does get to a point where you can not take anymore lack of sleep yourself, sleep deprivation can have such a horrendous affect on your life, you actually think your going mad. He kept saying he would but it took years for him to actually go to doctors about it . During those time he used to wake himself up numerous times in the night yet he had no memory of it himself. So All in all he was genuinely so tired himself through it. So him putting things down to tiredness I fully understood. So no not really he had no other symptoms. None that could actually say why he kept running a low grade fever on and off, it was a really strange period in our lives. He couldn’t understand it, I was so tired at one point I didn’t try to understand it. I do know lack of sleep can cause strange things to happen to the body. So with his job we had private medical insurance. In the end he went to see about his snoring hopefully killing two birds with one stone. Allowing us to sleep and hopefully it was related to sleeping. Why he snores so badly he had served in the military for 22yers with him being posted to Northern Ireland during the troubles he’d had his nose broken quite w few times, a nerve was trapped between two very soft bones that he could no breath properly when asleep. In true when he was awake either yet it never showed when he was awake, cutting a long story short The sorted the nerve out etc cut some cartilage away suddenly after he heals no more snoring. Yet typical man he hardly ever went doctor so he just basically lived with these low grade fevers until that day he came home from work saying he felt a little unwell, I had stopped mentioning doctors by now, you can only suggest so much over the years, plus he had started snoring again, he was told years before after the op it might come back, it wasn’t has bad. Had he not gone a bit grey that day I doubt he would have ever gone doctors so as I said in my last message he was whizzed if to hospital thinking it was his heart. When he was asked if he fancied the job as school caretaker. When he saw the consultant again he said for 3 years he had, been having this problem with his white cells yet no nearer to finding out why, so he told the consultant he was going back to work, he stayed under the consultant for a further few years until the consultant said basically he was or had still got a virus, it may not be in fact most unlikely be the same one that he first ended up in hospital for, that’s when he was told there was over 2 million types of viruses in this country. Because antibiotics didn’t not have a affect on viruses they could continue to see why he kept getting them or more or less live with it. He said he would live with it, so yes he’s continuing to get low grade fevers most of the time, it does go never for long. No one knows why, only downside is now he’s a lot older. He sometimes becomes ill but refuse to go doctors because he just says it’s a virus. Although now he’s retired also a big risk to stomach cancer. His dad and younger sister died in there fifties of stomach cancer.  He’s been advised to get himself checked. No still not done it. Now he uses the excuse that because I have matestetic lung cancer, terminal. I have days where I am bed ridden because of it, it’s becoming more often I ave oxygen st home etc, I was 54 when diagnosed with a prognosis of 6/8 months this was back in 2013 no one actually can answer why I am still alive I am supposed to have died yet here I still am. You are so young sweetheart to be going through this, as anyone ever suggested a PET SCAN. If not I know in your position I would start asking about one. Then again you never really hear of them until you have been more or less diagnosed with cancer. A pet scan can detect cancer in any part of the body except spine if my memory serves me well. It’s a ingection of a small amount of radiation with a surgery substance that’s given through a IV line, you have to try and not move for a hour, then they Scan you. Cancer lives of the sugar in our bodies, Mia that with the radiation once scan has been seen if anywhere that glows then it cancer, it can detect cancer well before any human eye can. I have had two. I know the cost of one is enormous. I have this Theroy that with all other tests consultations eye, eventually the cost mounts up, that sometimes a PET scan can work out cheaper. Also despite they could see some tumours on my lungs I still had to have a pet scan, where they whee 99.5% I had cancer, after pet scan I had biopsy to confirm it was cancer, I believe I had the first pet scan to see exactly where the cancers where, obviously not the bigger ones, the possible smaller ones they couldn’t see. On my second one, it showed loads and loads of smaller tumours growing on both lungs, yet they could only see a few. I did have the biggest part of my left lung out on original diagnosis. The two tumours in that upper lobe where quite big. I didn’t have any symptoms. It was only because I thought I had cut the back of my throat strumming the lawn that I started coughing up blood that went on for months. I went doctor to have a couple of stitches put in. Oops did not expect in a million years but it was the big C anyhow I best go now I takes you to death, do start making enquires about a PET scan, do let me know how you are, and how things progress please. Bye for now Marj xx
