Random fevers, really worried

I have got myself worried sick from googling too much! (I have chronic health anxiety)

About 2 months ago I would randomly wake at night feeling shaky, nearly like I was too hot/cold at the same time. It was weird but only happened randomly so I never thought too much of it.

2 weeks ago I woke hot and sweaty and my temp was 38.2. I went to the doctor and she said my tonsils were swollen with puss on them and I def had tonsillitis (even though I had no throat pain) she put me on antibiotics. She took bloods and a throat swab. Bloods were normal and the swab was clear. Since then I dont see any puss on my throat and dont have any other symptoms apart from I keep getting random low grade fevers! I seem to go a few days with no fever then it comes back again, it makes me feel so uncomfortable and keeps me awake at night.

Of course google has scared me silly! I cant see a doctor for a few days and I'm trying to keep it together but its hard. Im currently on holiday with my kids and this is all I can think of. Everything I read online points to random fevers being a really bad sign. Has anyone experienced this? Im so scared :(

  • Do you have any other symtoms? I have fevers after doing little walking of 10 mins or housework of 39 sometimes 40 and when resting mostly 38 or 38.5. The only restbite i get is the mornings. My fever goes up throughout the day and seem to suffer in the night. I have excessive sweating due to the fevers. All my bloods are normal except slightly raised blood count and immflamatory markers were slightly raised not enough to indicate infection. Ive had urine cultures which negative. I feel tired constantly and i recently had a episode of chest pain which came on suddenly lasted about 10 mins. I have shooting pains in the neck and under arm on left side but no lumps tp be felt. I have had left sided flank pain since october thats where it all started. I had a week where i itched every where but after antihitamines i only itch on my neck all over now. No rash. Ive lost a dress size amd a half since october. Ive been by heamtology consultant who dismissed me because bloods were 'normal'. GP feels i am showing b symtoms of lymphoma. Hope it all gets sorted. I know this is scary but it could just be from the infection. It can stay in the system for a few weeks. Keep an eye on it. If you are getting ill more often and taking longer to get over the illness go to GP.

  • I dont have any other symptoms apart from the fever. I supposidly had tonsillitis 2 weeks ago even though my throat wasnt sore at all! I think the glands in my neck are up too. Im travelling home from holiday today and hope to get in with the doctor tomorrow! Are you checking your temperature constantly? I cant help but check mine all the time! Do you always have a temp or does it sometimes be normal? Mine was normal for a few days and now its up again. I feel drained constantly and nausous. Its stopping me sleeping as I wake up every hour feeling hot and sweaty. You must be going crazy with worry too! Are you managing to hold it together? Im really struggling :(

  • Jolamine thanks for your reply, I am keeping note of all fevers etc. Seems worse at night, the second I fall asleep my temp rises. Im exhausted.

Musicismylife, how are you holding up? I know you have your appt on wednesday. I hope all goes well for you. Has your symptoms eased at all?

  • I had a cold last sunday, monday, tuesday (on my birthday) at one point i was going to phone 111 as my temp was coming up 40.1 had a cold bath and took usual paracetamol and nurofen and within 30 mins was down to 38.7. Since tuesdays ive had no fevers (touch wood) and just random shooting pains in neck and under arm on left side. Ive had pain random in left flank and thats it. I recieved a letter from my original consultant who changed her mind after i left and instead of referring me back to gp decided to book me in for ct scab and basically saying she will not see me unless its a positive ct scan but no appt yet however now im being passed over 2 week cancer rule in own area they can see previous bloods, xrays ive had. I will take my consultant letter which says my last set of blood tests were normal altho my ESR was 12 which she says is normal on the letter but on nhs website says its normal for a female aged 55 and over. Im 32. Dont see how thats normal?? I will flag this. Then she goes on to say in the letter that if ct is negative maybe i should see a rheumotologist as i could have a connective tissue disorder or fibromialgia? Altho my ESR is normal so she doubts is the case. However it isnt normal levels so still could be this i guess.

  • Thats great you have had no fevers! I hope they stay away. Could the fevers have been related to all your illnesses etc? You seem to have been sick alot recently.

Im glad you are getting a CT scan, hopefully you wont wait too long for it. I hope your appt goes well on wednesday and you can rule out the serious things soon!

My fevers are getting more often, they go up to around 38 now, mainly when I'm sleeping. I've got myself sick with worry :(

  • Could it just be hot in the room? As its been muggy recently. And yes ive been unwell but even when i have been better ive had these symtoms. Im still thinking i have infection somewhere oin my system and when i get another infection it makes it worse. Lumps are the most common symtom of lymphoma but i have no lumps visable. The ct scan will look for lumps that cant be felt. My letter said that be prepared to stay all day as they carry out futher tests. My appt is at 9am. I think they will run more blood tests and ct scan for sure. If it comes back negative then i guess ill be referred back to gp and ill be happy it isnt lymphoma but sad they still dont know what is causing they symtoms. I dont think fibro could be causing the fever but who knows. I know someone on here says they tested for lymphoma has same symtoms as me and all came back as negative so was discharged. GP doesnt know who to refer to so has to 'live with it'. Maybe they will do this with me. Hope not as its awful. I am so tired i slept 18 hours monday and all i had was a cold. It wiped me out.

  • Oh that would be great if you got your CT scan at your appt wednesday and you didnt have to wait for the other one! I hope everything is clear for you and this is your fevers gone too! Is your temp perfect now?

I'm the opposite, I'm tired because I cant sleep when my temp rises. Its not the room, I even tried sleeping with the window open and a light blanket. I woke up shaking and shivering. I was hoping it was because the room was cold but my temp was 38c :(

As someone with severe anxiety I dont know what to do with myself. Googling worries me sick and I'm finding it hard to function as my worry about this is all I can think about

  • My temp has been constantly 38 since jan! Sometimes 37.5 if im lucky, mostly 37.8 to 38.5 is normal for me now. I dont get shivering just feel so hot like my body is burning. Atm 37.9. Not too bad still not 'normal'.

Please try not to worry. My issues have been ongoing since october and only now im being refered but i do feel my drs are fed up of me being there hence why i was refered. Hope you dont have to wait this long

  • Oh I thought your fevers were away :( I guess this isn't high but still not 'normal' like you say. Mine's normal atm, 37.2. But by the evening it's around 37.5, then when I sleep it goes higher. 38 doesnt sound high but it's enough to make me shiver and stop me being able to sleep. Doesn't help that my 2 year old has a vomiting bug atm so I'm looking after him aswell.

That's crazy that you've had to wait so long. I guess because you also had other random infections going on that they could pinpoint things too. I wish I had a runny nose or something this could be blamed on but I don't. The doctor is meant to ring me on the 31st to see how I am and if things have settled or not. But I might just ring her before then, tell her I'm getting worse and see can I get some sort of tests done. I dont do well waiting and not knowing, its too much time to google and fret!

    Hi Smoore,

I'm glad to hear that you are keeping a record for your GP. Most people find that their temperature rises at night, so unless it gets very high, it may not be worth worrying about. Your GP should know.

If your symptoms are geting worse it might be worth phoning your GP to get an earlier appointment.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I think I will phone, I've got myself in such a bad way mentally. I cant function at all its got that bad.

My temp is going to about 38 but surely that cant be normal. It wouldnt be doing that for no reason :(

  • Musicismylife, I just want to wish you the best of luck for tomorrow! I'll be thinking of you and hope you get good news xx

  • Oh bless you smoore921 for thinking of me when you have all these symtoms too that youre worrying about. I will be fine im sure but i will update you when i know. How are you holding up in this heat?

  • Im not too bad atm, I didnt get a fever last night and can only hope for the same tonight! But who knows, I've no control over when it will happen or what sort of night I will have.

I hope you will be able to sleep tonight. How are you feeling about tomorrow, are you very nervous or are you settled? Do you have someone to go with you? X

  • Thats true im quite warm this evening but think everyone is. My husband will be in and out as he will have to pick up my little one. Dont want her in the hospital i think ill be on my own mostly. Ill be fine though. Have my phone with me and im kind of not expecting lymphoma diagnosis now as my bloods were normal and i have no lumps on neck. I think its just going to be for precaution

  • If you need someone to talk to at any stage write to me here or message me okay! :) what age is your daughter? My youngest is 2.

Yes it is warm, do you sleep with a thermomoter beside you or am I the only crazy one that does that haha. If I wake during the night I keep checking it!

  • Shes 4. Thank you, no just i know as i am sweating. I go get it and check once then put a cold flannel on my head and try and get some sleep. Im here too. Try a fan with ice near it. Its like air conditioning. Works a treat

    Hi Musicismylife,

I am sorry to hear that you still haven't got an accurate diagnosis. I just want to wish you all the very best for your appointment tomorrow and, I hope that this will begin to point you in the right direction.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks, more bloods testing different things, he doesnt think i have lymphoma as i have no lumps. Have a appt in 4 weeks. Have an ultrasound tommorow to check my spleen. No diagnosis yet. He was wondering wether its something else like a imflamatory related. Trouble is he said all my tests come up as borderline. For example normal wbc is between 4 and 10 mine is floating around 10.1 to 12.5 not enough for infection but right on or slightly over higher threshold. Same with my crp and esr. So if all negative im being referred to rheumatologist however, a long wait for that. Plus side i met a lady who has most of thr same symtoms as me also told not lymphoma today as is having further bloods and is being referred for rheumatologist. Guesd we will see. I thought i was crazy making up things that arnt there. Glad someone else has same issues as me but upset i can see it dragging on a few more months :(

  • Oh no I'm sorry. Its unfair how long things do be drawn out isnt it. At least the ultrasound is tomorrow, hopefully that will come back normal and you dont have to wait long for results. Its good they think its not lymphoma, just hard on you not knowing whats going on :(

Glad you met someone else who has similar issues and she was also told the same as you. Is the other woman getting fevers aswell?

  • Yes fevers, no lumps, itching all over, chest pain she had the same. I have weight loss and flank pain left sided also. He said if we dont phone you assume they are normal and ill book you in for an appt in 4 weeks time to see what we will do next.
