Advice please xx

Hi. Advice if possible. I found a hard pea sized lump just behind my nipple last week and went straight to the doctor who reffered me to get it checked. It doesnt hurt but is definitely new as I'm a checker.. I just wandered if anyone else has experienced similar. I'm not daft and dont want anyone beating around the bush. X

    Hi FreddieM,

It is 9 and 10 years since I found my lumps. Both were a little lower down from the nipple, but neither seemed very big. Sadly, both were malignant.

I am glad to hear that you are a checker, so hopefully you've caught this early if it is something untoward. I was told by my surgeon that malignant breast lumps seldom hurt.

Have you got your date for the breast clinic yet? If not, I hope that it comes through soon.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you. I was in doctors on Wednesday and I had a letter saturday saying my referral had been recieved and an appointment will follow. So very quick movement. Of course I'll keep you posted. Stupidly I googled it. Lol WHAT NOT TO DO. X

    Hi FreddieM,

The speed of referral is something that worries many people. We are nearly all seen within a 2 week time frame, so this is nothing to worry about. What type of specialist are you being referred to and, what are your symptoms? (You don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but it would help to point you in the direction of the right people if we knew this).

Consulting Dr Google is never a good idea, particularly when you don't know exactly what your diagnosis is. Try your best to steer clear of the internet until you get a diagnosis.

    Kind regards,

  • No I dont mind answering. It's just a hard pea sized lump behind my nipple. My breast looks fine but is now tender. But this could be where I keep checking it like it's just going to just disappear. Lol. I'm 40. Fit and well. No breast cancer in the family although both parents did die of cancer they weren't genetic sorts.one was brain tumour and one was throat cancer. But it doesnt feel right. I have a bad feeling. But a amazing husband and 2 young daughters and I'm so happy so it's just my luck for it to be bad news. I found myself overthinking and preparing for the worst and planning for my death  it in my head which is ridiculous as even if I do have cancer it could be treated. But because my parents lost their battle i just assume i will to if that makes sense x

    Hi,

We all tend to think the worst at this stage but, just because both of your parents died of cancer doesn't meant that you will too. They were totally different types and presumably quite aggressive forms of the disease. I lost my own mum to secondary breast cancer, which had spread to her bones, brain, liver and lungs. When I was diagnosed, I felt like you, I was sure that it would take me quickly.  I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and, find that there is just no comparison between the diagnosis, treatment and after care that I have had and that which my mum experienced.

Thanks to our friends at Cancer Research and elsewhere great strides are continually being made. Breast cancer is one of the more successful cancers to treat. A lot still depends on the grade and type of breast cancer, but many people are now living with cancer instead of dying with it. You know your own body better than anyone else and, if it doesn't feel right you are as well to get it checked out.

It is particularly difficult to cope with a cancer diagnosis when you have young children. What ages are your daughters? I am glad to hear that you have an amazing husband who can support you through any tests you need.

Of all the people referred to the breast clinic only 1 in 8 will have cancer, so the odds are still on the positive side for you. If the worst comes to pass, it sounds as if you have caught it early, so it should be quite treatable. Try to keep busy doing fun things with the family to distract you from the wait. Keep away from Google and don't worry about what you don't know yet.

I am still hopeful that all will turn out well for you in the end.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
