Colonoscopy today 13th July

1st time today had a colonoscopy.  Reading others experiences with this procedure makes you realise everybody is unique. I have had sedation before, but with an endoscopy and I went out like a light and didn't feel a thing. This was a completely different ball game.  Taking Moviprep was not easy for me as I am not a big drinker and it does taste foul in my opinion.

Hand on heart, the actual colonoscopy was painful at times.  Don't know whether I was not given enough sedation that I felt pain, and had to have gas & air as well during the painful bit.

At the end of the day, some discomfort is a small price to pay when the outcome could have been a whole lot different. Being 77 years young with more chance of cancer the older you are, I was so grateful when they said I had no cancer, nor polyps or diverticulitis.    I would say to others, go with sedation and take the gas & air as well.  I'm convinced that had I been given a stronger dose of sedative, I wouldn't have felt anything.

  • Hi there,

i’m Rich. A research Nurse with lots of experience in endoscopy.

your bowel prep experience sounds very familiar. Lots of fluid to drink, poor taste.

Given my experiences I wouldn’t be so quick to blanket support the use of sedation. I’ve looked after patients who wanted to use gas & air only, but have required sedation. But generally speaking, when you give people time and fully explain how to use gas & air, people absolutely get on with it. I’ve had to wrestle it from the Hands of some of my patients
