Low grade change But hpv positive

recently I have had a smear test done I got my results back and my letter said it was low grade change but reported back hpv positive I called my doctor and ask if I had cancer all she said was no you don’t there is nothing to worry about at  hpv will go away on it’s no need to be concerned all it means they want me to come back next year to keep an eye on it but I’m still worried and don’t really no what it means can some one please give me a clear answer it is a scary thing

  • Hi. I had to reply because I found out years ago that I’m HPV positive, but I was told that it doesn’t go away and that there is no cure for it. Apparently it sticks for life making abnormal cells more likely to happen than in people that don’t have HPV. So now after reading this I’m very confused.

  • Hi Happytohelp

There is alot of conflicting info about hpv+ infection.

Both Ruby and yourself have been given correct info but not a fuller picture of infection.

It is correct that the bodies immune system fights off the infection in most people.

But for a number of infected persons the immune system does not clear the infection.

And an even smaller number of people are unfortunate that the infection causes a change in their dna which can result in some of the cancers we all are hearing about.

The thing to remember is that the majority clear the infection, but if you know you are hpv+ it is wise to keep up with smears and appointments and watch out for anything unusual going on in throat or oral areas.

Wouldnt it be great if Drs sat down with their patients and gave them a much clearer picture of this infection some pamphlets too? There are so many very worried young women who need better info, and google isnt the best way to find it.

Ruby do keep your appointment as its the only way you can be reassured that no further changes have occured, and listen to your Dr try not to worry.

    xx

  • I got a call from my doctor when I was 19 years old asking me to come in for a smear test she said even though they don’t usually do this until age 25 she wanted it done because of my sexual history; (lost virginity at a very young age, my choice, hadn’t even hit my teens, was very sexually inquisitive from a very young age as well.) I had a smear done and it came back on CIN 2. By the time they actually got around to doing the colposcopy which was about 5 months later!! It had changed to CIN 3 (at 19!!!) they gave me smear tests once a year to start with, now it’s every 2 years even though I have never had a normal result. I’ve had colposcopys a few times. Normally comes back with abnormal cells. Once had another CIN 2 and a couple of CIN 1. It was a few years ago they told me that I’m HPV positive and that they think I’ve had it from a young age. I’m now 31. I’m telling you this because 3 months ago my period was a week early went back to normal after that until 4 days ago. I’m a week early again but not only that it wasn’t normal. The blood (if you can call it that) was light pink and very watery plus there was hardly any. Just there when wiping myself. The next day nothing! It stopped. The next day it was back, a bit heavier but still only small amounts. Today though it’s back to my normal period very heavy, thick and red. Just a bit worried as what this could be? I haven’t had a smear test in about 2 years. Don’t know why? They just haven’t sent never my usual reminder for some reason? If anyone can tell me why my periods are suddenly going irregular and different on me I would be very grateful.

  • Hi Happytohelp

To be honest no person on here can answer your medical questions or even hint at a diagnosis.

You have described a blood tinged discharge rather than a normal period. I can only stress that you see your gp and at the same time let them know you have not had your usual smear test recall. This is the only way you will find out what is going on with your cycle.

You seem to know how your own monthly cycle works and if its telling you its wrong then you must go get checked out. Its the only way to get peace of mind.

You have written very frankly and seem to be a very brave woman,so I know you will go along and get checked out.

Take care and best wishes I hope it all turns out fine. xx
