If it's not one thing its another!

I have been diagnosed with severe health and generalised anxiety, had cbt and counselling a number of times but they helped for all of a week. I constantly feel i have some symptom and then convince myself i have a type of cancer. Last week it was bowel cancer because i have an ache in my stomach this week its cervical cancer. I regularly think about suicide to stop my brain constantly over thinking.

  • Arnt you on any medication my wife was like that years ago she's been fine ever since as long as she takes the meds,

    Billy

  • Hi Billy, no not on any medication, i have asked the doctor for medication who said try cbt again first. I know i need the medication its taking iver my enjoyment of life now.

  • It sounds like gp doesn't think your bad enough to have meds can you get to see another doctor that might help,

  • I am going to ring tomorrow see if i can get an appointment. The doctor i had seen laughed when i said i wanted a mole checking because it was only small and then i started crying and said i had health anxiety and wanted medicating he said no try cbt again. I am on the waiting list for cbt again.

  • Hello Joannedbo,

Welcome to our forum. This type of anxiety can truly be overwhelming and I can imagine you feel drained and exhausted by it all. The good news though is that you are aware of the problem and it is very treatable - as CBT and counselling haven't really helped you, I would go back to the GP and explain that your anxiety has become very severe and that you really need help. Make sure you tell your doctor everything and I am sure they will point you in the right direction.  Have a look too at AnxietyUK  which is a very good resource for people suffering from anxiety.

You mentioned you have had some pretty dark thoughts because you want to stop your brain from overthinking - again mention these to your GP and if things get really bad, don't hesitate to ring the Samaritans helpline they are there to talk to you when you feel you need it the most. You can find more details about it on this page. Perhaps when you feel your thoughts are taken over by the health anxiety, you could try and distract yourself watching a good film or going out doing an activity you really enjoy. It will really help you to take your mind off your anxiety triggers.

We are all here whenever you need to chat.

    Best wishes,
