Gastroscopy with sedation

Hi everyone,

I just thought I’d give everyone who is nervous out there a positive review about my gastroscopy experience, as before I went all I did was read horror stories about the whole thing online.

I was the ultimate nervous patient I watched every YouTube video, read every blog about how awful it is. So I went into the hospital crying my eyes out. Cried at the check in desk, cried in the nurses room while they were doing my paperwork. I even cried when the nurse said they had to put the canula in!

Everyone was so lovely they let me have my canula put in at the very last moment as I was such a woss about the whole situatuion!

I waited in a small waiting room for about 45 minutes just scrolling on my phone (all while crying lol) the lovely nurse kept checking on me, he even said he’s going to find me after to check how it went which eased my nerves.

I got called in and instantly cried my eyes out, the poor staff in the room looked at me like I was crazy, but they instantly all came to me to comfort. I was hysterically crying saying I couldn’t do it and the drugs wouldn’t work bla bla bla. They instantly were so lovely. Let me sit on the bed and wrapped me in lovely warm blankets and got me comfy. The nurse put my canula in - this was the worst part promise. she was even stroking my hair and cuddling me lol. The doctor explained the procedure and sprayed the throat spray down my throat, I panicked at this part because you genuinely can’t swallow - there’s no question about it, but when the doctor reminded me yes you can’t swallow but you can breathe can’t you I was fine! (It’s crazy where you’re mind jumps to when your nervous) they got me comfortable and put the mouth guard in. I was really upset at this point really scared, they injected my arm with sedation and instantly my heart slowed down and I was calm. Definitely the weirdest feeling ever- all my panic went. I don’t even remember falling asleep but I did! I woke up to him saying I pulled it out (can’t even remember) and they injected me with more sedation and that’s where my memory has completely gone blank. I woke up getting wheeled out the room buzzing that it was over!

The nurse came over and told me what happened apparently I put up quite the protest but honestly don’t remember a thing.

i know it’s hard to think it when you’re nervous, but it’s honestly not that bad!! Always go for sedation I felt fabulous all day and slept like a baby!!!

  • Hi

I have just found this site, I too am even petrified to go back to Dr's as he said if pain continues I will have to have the camera down my throat!!!!!  A friend said she had it and awful the Dr said they don't put you to sleep as you need to be awake!!

    This freaked me out!!

I have been having pain in my chest/windpipe area that causes wind but the tablets off Dr and AntiAcid liquid aren't working much anymore  infact when I drink/eat sometimes it feels like something is there and stops it going down then it moves and all ok!!

The pain can keep me awake and is now driving me mad, obviously due to COVID I can't see Dr or be referred.

I know I have to get sorted but DO THEY ALL OFFER SEDATION?

I feel that stress is making ths pain worse.

    Help!!!!

  • Hi Wenny,

I can assure you ALL hospitals will offer you sedation. Please do not listen to gossip and scary stories, the doctor has your best interests and will do whatever possible to make you comfortable.
They sit you in a room before and give you a little checklist to fill out with a nurse, they do blood pressure etc and then ask if you would like sedation.

you then wait in the little room waiting to be called and go into the endoscopy room, they sedate you there and then start the process.
The last thing I remember is them putting the mouth guard on, everything else is blank.
please don't worry, honestly it wasn't bad at all. This is coming from someone who's scared of blood tests!

  • Thank you so much for replying Georgia C I realised after your post was 2019.

I hope you are well and results all ok.

Can I ask what your symptoms were like please.

    Thank you again xx

  • Hi wenny,

no probs, I don't mind replying at all. Feels like yesterday I had this done!
my symptoms were tightness in throat, struggling to breathe, pain in ribs and throat, coughing, pain in throat, sore throat, couldn't eat anything without feeling sick, bad stomach after eating.

I suffered for two years, the only test results I got back was irritated stomach from acid, and slight wear on eosphaghus.

I have little to no symptoms now, I slowly eased myself off omeprazole. I done this by a complete overhaul of my diet, no saturated fats, bad food etc. It will work out for you, just have to cross all the other things off the list first, and unfortunately the camera is the way to do it.

  • Arrrrrrr Georgia so glad that nothing major came back and all good with you.

Yes think I need Dr to refer me asap get it over and done with.

    Thank you again love xx

  • Hey Molly

i know these post are all old but I came across it when searching endoscopy experiences!

im having one 2nd Oct and I'm absolutely petrified, I have emetephobia which is severe sickness phobia so this procedure is my worst nightmare.

i read you also have fears around vomiting which too made it v scary for you.

i had one 20 years ago v young and it got abandoned due to me putting up a fight even under sedation and I'm scared it will happen again!!

please can you share your experience?

  • Hey did you end up going to your apoiment how was it? I've got the exact same fear as you my worst nightmare is being sick I have apoiment for the camera next Wednesday I'm getting sedated but I'm totally dreading it

  • Having endoscopy fri .  Feel very nervous and panicky about it and not sleeping . Reading these posts helps as doctors must be used to people like me

  • I've recently had a gastroscopy and was very nervous. The staff were all really lovely and let me have the sedation and mouth spray. It was over in 5 minutes and not as bad as I imagined at all. Don't worry you will be fine.

  • Georgia, thank you so much for your posts. I was having a panic attack just thinking about it, and even asked the doctor for a GA but he said no. I don't mind cannulas but I struggle to get through a dental procedure without gagging...and I have a major fear of choking.

Mine's next week and I feel like I'll be exactly like you on the way in, so your story was really reassuring, thanks!
