Biopsy clear but ultrasound abnormal

Hi Everyone, I just wondered whether anybody has had a similar experience to this, and what the outcome was: basically I had a swollen axillary lymph node (towards top of breast on armpit side). Was sent to the breast clinic where they did an ultrasound. The lymph node I found looked normal, however there was another one lurking under my armpit, which looked 'abnormal'. So they biopsied that one. Biopsy came back clear, but they are still worried about the abnormal appearance of the node, so want it out to examine. I'm booked in for surgery and more worried about not waking up from general anaesthetic than I am about having cancer. Anyway I was wondering whether anyone else had gone down this pathway and how likely it is for cancer to be found in the lymph node excision, when biopsy already showing as clear? Also, I am breastfeeding and wondering whether that could affect the appearance of a lymph node in ultrasound? Thanks! Jo

  • HI Jo and welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately we can't answer those questions but if you make a note of them and take them with you to your next appointment I'm sure your medical team will be in a better position to give you some insight.

We have many ladies here who have been in similar situations that will understand how you're feeling at the moment so hopefully some of them will reply soon to offer their support and advice.

I hope your surgery goes well and the appearance of the lymph node turns out to be no cause for concern.

    All the best,

  • Hello, what was the outcome of your surgery?

I have similar symptoms and they are still unsure of the cause.

    Thanks
