Hi Beatricex. I was told I might get a fine needle with no anaesthetic, or a thicker needle with a local anaesthetic. I assume it’s to take a sample for a biopsy... I don’t understand what the difference is. Do you?

I am of the opinion that there is nothing I can do to change anything at the moment and will have to wait and see but the waiting between appointments and tests is horrid.

I had no anaesthetic and was told the needle is the size of the one that would be used to take blood .

Somehow I hope it’s the wider needle because I read here about someone who hadn’t had the necessary bits taken out for biopsy, just the connective tissue and blood vessel, I think. The results were inconclusive. I’d rather be absolutely sure they take what they need to. 

I realise it’s not the ultrasound I’m scared of, but of a positive diagnosis. I’m really very anxious. 

I am delighted that your results are good Beatricex! I think that bit about the consultant telling me it could be benign may have been someone else? My consultant seemed to think cancer likely, though he didn’t say it in so many words. He went into what the treatment would be rather than offering other possible explanations. On the other hand, I hope to have my results on Monday. I’ve just been on google (mistake?). Now I’m more worried about radiotherapy than the diagnosis. 

Thank you so much for this Beatricex. The consultant seemed sure. Maybe they prepare you for the worst, but that approach has poisoned the wait. And yet... because I have private health insurance, the wait is a fraction of the NHS, and there’s the difference. Yours turned out to be benign? F x
