Melanoma or something else??

Hello all I’m worried sick at the moment!! My partner of 15years has been suffering for months with heart burn I managed to drag him the doctors Monday last week!! the doctor ordered bloods to be done urgent as he’s recently lost over a stone without trying we then get a cal from haematology saying to come in urgent so we go the next day this is the Thursday haematologist finds enlarged lymph nodes and says he’s sending him for scans and to skin clinic to look at mole!! We went skin yesterday and they did a biopsy on his back saying it looked like melanoma!! We’ve now had a ct scan come through for Sunday to scan from neck to groin why has all these appointments come so quick I’m freaking out didn’t even think Out-Patient scans happened on the weekend please put my mind at rest Someone!!

  • Hi,

Everything does seem to be moving fast but this sometimes happens when referred from one department to another. As for the scan on Sunday, it's not unknown for this to happen if they have a backlog to clear (to meet Government targets). A relative works in oncology and they often work one weekend a month to get back on track with appointments. It's good that your partner is being checked out quickly as it's the waiting that is the hardest in these situations. Good luck and please let us know how you both get on.

  • As said above scans on a Sunday are not uncommon if there is a backlog and staff are available to carry them out. My sister works in paediatrics and they regularly carry out diagnostic testing at the weekend if they are struggling to hit targets.

I'm currently awaiting an appointment with a dermatologist regarding a mole on my arm that I'm not happy with. Saw my GP just under 2 weeks ago, have had a letter saying I'm on the waiting list but no appointment as of yet. I tend to jump between being quite calm about the whole thing to a huge panic and total obsession that leads to me staring at the mole for hours as if that's going to tell me something! The waiting is definitely the hardest part.

Good luck to you and your partner. I pray for good news for you, at least you will know what you are (or aren't) dealing with relatively soon and can start to process that either way.

  • thank you for your reply I hope you get you’re appointment soon!! I’m praying for good results for us all just can’t stop thinking the worst!! Hope your feeling ok!!

  • My GP sent me as an urgent referral with suspected skin cancer in March this year. Within 2 weeks I was seen by consultant and 3 weeks later had the biopsy. What I thought was bruising and a blister on my heal turned out to be a 4.7mm thick malignant melanoma. From the point of initial referal and confirmed diagnosis I have had CT, MRI, node biopsy and major skin flap and graft surgery to reconstruct my foot. I am now 4 weeks post surgery and waiting for liver MRI results which will hopefully be my all clear

Some of my scans have been done over the weekend and although it seems like never ending tests I am thankful they have been so thorough. I know it is extremely hard waiting for results but it has helped me to just process the information I do have and work on that not worrying about what could be.

I still have a long recovery ahead but 1 day at a time for me.
