Blood in stool for nearly 3 weeks

Hi I’m a 24 year old male just under the last 3 weeks I’ve been having blood in my stool on and off  It happened the first time then the next day it was fine then the following week I was away  on Holiday and it happened quite a bit when I came Back I saw my GP and told him what had been happening and he was ruling out anything serious because I didn’t have any symptoms the GP Gave me some medication and he said it should clear up in 4 days  I started taking the medication on the Thursday and Friday Saturday and Sunday it was fine it was clear but yesterday I had a bit of blood I’m thinking maybe go back to my GP but I have one more day of medication left

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem great if I could have some advice thanks

  • Hi Kieran1995,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. While I can't advise on your specific situation, there could be a number of different reasons for what's happening. The most important thing is that you've been to see your GP. I would suggest completing the course of medication and then if it still doesn't seem to have helped, to return to your GP. They're always best placed to advise on what's going on.

You could always keep track of any progress or lack of progress by writing things down - this may help to show the GP or to help you talk it through with them.

Wishing you all the best and I hope the situation improves soon.

  • Hi, just wondering what happened as I am currently in the same situation and am very worried.

  • Hi Kieran. I have had this problem but I also have bowel inflammation that is still undiagnosed, so I'm afraid I don't have any answers yet. However, my bf (who is 30) has also had blood on and off for a while and recently had a slight change of bowel habit. He finally went to the GP who ordered a stool test to check for blood that you can't see. This test came back positive so he was referred for a colonoscopy on a 2 week referal, which came back completely normal (just some internal hemorrhoids).

At 24 it's extremely unlikely to be anything serious. However, even if only for your own price of mind, I think it would be best to go back to your GP and let them know what's happening.
