LLETZ and biopsy

Hi

Attended a colposcopy appointment this week following a smear result showing minor changes! At the appointment the nurse explained that it was highly unlikely anything to worry about and that she wouldn’t scan, take biopsy, or LLETZ at this appointment unless necessary! She explained she could see an ectropian which was nothing to worry about then proceeded to check the rest of the cervix with the vinegar solution (I think) then said she had seen something and needed to scan, then recommended I have LLETZ on the spot which I agreed to! She showed me the scan which showed mostly green spots, one red and one orange! I left in a bit of a daze as I didn’t anticipate anything being wrong and she told me I’d have results in 4 wks and will be notified of any other treatment required.. and I would have smear and HPV test again in Oct! Does this sound very serious? I hate being blindsided and feel I’d rather be prepared for bad news! Any advice appreciated x

  • Hi Jayphi,

Sorry to hear that you needed some further treatment following on from your smear results.

LLETZ is the most common treatment for removing abnormal cells from the cervix. Although you've already had your treatment  there is some good information on the Jo's Trust website which I'm linking for you here that may help you to understand things.

One of our nurses has answered a post that has very similar questions to your and you might find it reassuring to have a look at her post here

I would say that treatment is very successful and most women (80%) will never need another treatment and it's routine practice to check again with another smear after 6 months.

If you'd like to chat with one of our nurses I'm sure they'd be happy to talk to you and offer some reassurance. You can call them on 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    I hope this helps.
