Lymph nodes swollen- very worried!!

Hi

my name is Anna and I’m 24. I have had a lot of issues with tonsillitis in the past. A month ago I realised I had a  lump under my chin, went to get it checked out straight away and they organised a blood test. Whilst I was waiting for the results my tonsils blew up, my right tonsil is 4X larger than my left.

went back to GP and got a course of pencilin. Was told my bloods came back with high inflammation so wanted to repeat and book a scan of the lump.

GP asked the usual questions of weight loss and night sweats but I haven’t had any one those symptoms.

my scan isn’t until next week and I’ve had swollen tonsils and the lump for a month now and no sign of it getting any better. My ears have been feeling funny like there is pressure but it comes and goes.

starting to get really worried for my scan and ENT appointment as my right tonsil is huge and the lump is really concerning

has anyone gone through something similar? Any stories would be greatly appreciated, google has not helped!

sorry for the long post and thank you for reading!

  • Hi there Anna,

i am really sorry you’ve been going through this and I know the thought of it being something sinister, which god forbid it is not, is terrifying and can cause a lot of anxiety and stress.

Although we don’t have exactly the same symptoms, I hope my story will reassure you a little bit. I am 19 years old and in the first year of uni. At the start of April, I started getting bad neck/ear pain and I found a lump in my neck. I immediately started panicking, crying thinking I had some sort of neck cancer. I went to the GPs and an ultrasound revealed it was an enlarged gland. I was relieved but also still concerned why it was so big! After a month and a half since I noticed the lump, it was gone. Just like that. I still have no idea why it was enlarged but since then I’ve had no problems with my neck. I also had symptoms of a sore throat, cough, hoarse voice etc. It all turned out to be nothing!

In terms of your tonsillitis however, I have a similar story about my boyfriend. 2 weeks before starting uni, my boyfriend had a horrific bout of tonsillitis (almost turned septic) and ever since then his tonsils have been enlarged significantly. He always complained of a sore throat even after his tonsillitis went. And after going to the GP he was given antibiotics again and they said his enlarged tonsils may just be his new normal. This was back in March and now he has not had a single episode of a sore throat yet his tonsils are still enlarged. He is still feeling fit and healthy and normal even with this.

I hope my story has helped a little. Please keep us updated. I wish you all the best and hope you are doing well x

  • Hello Rani - I'm afraid I can't give you any medical advice/info but what I can try to do is offer you a bit of reassurance. I've been worried witless over the past week waiting for a diagnosis & today I got good news. The chances are there is nothing for you to worry about even tho' I know you must be scared. Did you know that 9 out of 10 people who are sent for tests for cancer come back absolutely clear? That's what you should try to focus on not anything negative.

You'll find lots of lovely people on this site who will help you cope with your worries until things get resolved so keep your eye on it but not every minute!! Keep yourself as busy as you can doing all the things you normally do & time will pass much more quickly than you think. And, as I say, think about 9 out of 10 with no real reason to worry.

    Chin up & think positively.

    Regards

    Purrfect

  • I’ve been having similar issues with symptoms, the only ones that I can seem to identify are either itching and the pain when I drink alcohol which is really strange.

I got asked about night sweats , weight loss etc but I’ve had none of that, other than the lumps on my neck which has been the main sign. Hopefully you find an answer soon and the news is not too sinister xxx
