waiting for results

hi,

i was referred to the hospital to see a dermatologist regarding changes in a patch of skin on my face. i got an appointment after 2 weeks and was sent for an urgent biopsy 2 days later because the doctor suspects possible melanoma. I was told i'd hear from the doctor after 4 weeks about results. i recieved a letter today which is 4 weeks and a day after the biopsy. i've been given an appoinment for 2 weeks time to discuss. people keep telling me i'd have been told by now if it was bad news but i know this isn't always the case. Is it normal to wait so long in this situation? i tbought after the 4 weeks at least i'd know either way and now it's going to be even longer!

  • Hi,

Waiting times for biopsy results for suspected melanoma average 4 weeks at the moment. The appointment you have received could be to tell you the results are positive or negative - most consultants do this face to face rather than by letter, no matter good or bad news. Sometimes results can come back as dysplastic navus which means the lesion is benign but they remove it all because it can turn cancerous if left in situ. So I'm afraid you aren't going to know for another 2 weeks. Try to keep busy to distract yourself and I hope your results bring good news. P!ease let us know how you get on.
