Inner cheek biopsy

Hi all.

So I was diagnosed with leukoplakia (first noticed on tongue then both cheeks) in December. The dentist has been keeping a close eye on it but has gotten worse so he sent me for a biopsy on Thursday.

I now look like a hamster and the pain doesn't ease with paracetamol.

Are there any tips other than keep the site clean and rinse with salt water?

Also how long does it take to get better?

I had for dissolvable stitches. I cant even eat properly it hurts so much!

I have my results 26th June so not long to wait now but it's still a daunting time.

Has anyone with leukoplakia had a biopsy that came back clear?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sending positive vibes to you all!

  • Hi emmaa88

Just wanted to share a positive story.  Something similar happened to my husband a few years back.  The dentist noticed a patch on his inner cheek and sent him for a biopsy. He was a smoker at the time too so it was a bit of a worry however, thankfully it came back fine.  He quit smoking not long afterwards too whIch was great.

I can't remember how long it took him to heal or what he did for the pain.  You could perhaps try  calling the nurses available through this site for some advice on that. Hopefully it eases for you soon.

I hope you get good results on the 26th x

  • Thank you Newmum.

That's reassuring to hear. Does your husband have regular checks still or had the leukoplakia gone now?

I have been a heavy smoker for 18 years but over the past few months I have been using an ecig with the intention of lowering my nicotine intake and quitting completely.

I also have swollen lymph nodes, which have been present for around 2 years now, so I think that maybe another reason for a biopsy as well as other health issue. So I'm hoping it is all just precautionary.

I really appreciate the time you've taken to reply. It's always good to hear a positive story! X

  • Hi

He doesn't have regular checkups other than usual ones with the dentist.  Thankfully, once he had it removed it didn't come back. He was also a heavy smoker for many years before this happened.

I think they have to be really cautious about these things so it probably is precautionary and hopefully will be nothing to worry about x

  • That's brilliant news!

So they might possibly remove all of mine then ...although I'm not sure how because it's quite bad.

    Fingers crossed though!

Maybe they may just keep an eye on it if it comes back clear or remove it under GA?

Yes it's good that they are being cautious. It's better than being thobbed off.

I already had a biopsy 2 months ago for abnormal cells of the cervix and that came back as CIN 1 so just have to have more regular smears to keep an eye on it which is reassuring x
