Referred to oncology - does this mean they think it’s cancer

Hi,

very long story short. I had male Breast cancer 3 years ago, which was treated with mastectomy and tamoxifen. Anyway for other reasons I had a ct in January which found a growth in my spine. After much back and forth I’ve had 2 further mri scans, been referred to different departments, eventually with the breast clinic taking over. I’m having another MRI on Tuesday then seeing the breast consultant on Wednesday. But I’ve also been booked in to see the oncologist next Wednesday.

no one has wanted to make a decision on what this growth is. I did get my medical records and scans, and the radiologist on every report says it needs urgent neurosurgery analysis. The neurosurgeon only looked at it in may and says it doesn’t yet need surgical intervention but recommends urgent referral to oncology for radiotherapy. No one has told me anything.

Because I’m finally seeing a consultant about it on Wednesday and oncology the following week, I’ve obviously put 2+2 together and got that I’ve got secondary cancer in my spine.

has anyone ever been referred to oncology before being told if they have cancer or not? Or been referred to oncology if they didn’t have cancer?

I’ve had 6 months of being in the dark about it, using snippets of info to try and figure out what going on.

I just want to know either way.

    Hi Danbo,

I'm sorry to hear about all this confusion surrounding your diagnosis. Your consultant will have discussed your case at his MDT meeting. This is the normal protocol. They hold a weekly meeting with all of those involved in your care to discuss the best way forward for you.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and, have had a lumpectomy flooowed by a double mastectomy. I have found that the best way to get answers is to ask questions. Why not write down a list of questions yourself and, take this with you when you go to see the consultant on  Wednesday?

I hope that you will find out a lot more this way. Do please keep in touch and, let us know how you get on.

We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolaine
