Complex Ovarian Cyst

First time I’ve posted to anything like this but I’m desperately seeking support/advice.

I went to GP months ago to talk about my consistent constant pelvic & lower back pain. They referred me for a ultrasound however this got delayed followed an abnormal cervical smear (long story)...

I contacted my GP again last week to mention I was still in pain which fluctuated in severity. I was also feeling exhausted all the the time (I’ve hypothyroidism) so I requested my thyroid bloods be done. Appt made for 18th June.

I had an internal & external scan on Monday & was told I’d get my results a week later. Two days later my GP rings me with my results. I’ve a complex left ovarian cyst with septation measuring 7.1cm. He asked if I had any family history of breast/ovarian cancer and asked me to come in for a CA125 blood test. I asked if it could wait until 18th when I was due in anyway & was told no it couldn’t and he’s booked me in first thing tomorrow and talked of referring me to gynaecologist.

Im desperately trying not to worry but it seems this is obviously the cause of my pain. It seems things thus far are being fast tracked.

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Many thanks

  • Its so easy to say "Don't worry" but its hard not too.

I am in the same position, went for a scan last (Fri) Dr called me on Monday morning to say they found a mass on my left Ovary. Went in for blood test CA125 which is normal and I now have to see Gynaecologist next week. I know exactly how you are feeling but I am desparately trying to stay  busy & positive and people have said most cysts are benign but I am still worried sick. I have bloating and backache but I haven't lost my appetite and don't feel full when eating so that's a positive for me. I do go to the toilet a lot though but mostly at night.

I have a real phobia of Hospitals so I am very anxious.

I hope everything goes well for you but let us know how you get on.

  • Hi there

I went to my gp on 23 may having had like a period pain once a month only lasting about half hour. Had no other symptoms at all. I was booked for ultrasound and blood tests, blood test ca125 came back raised at 120, ultrasound confirmed I had a complex cyst 5cm on left ovary, although the sonogrspher said it wasn't screaming out cancer to her which did give me hope. I've been fastracked to gynaecologist appointment is 24 june, so I am of course worried, but as my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer on 7 march and had it removed on 13 April, I am taking his view, don't worry till something to worry about and if it's there you can't change it but you can deal with it, which is what we've done so far....try and keep positive I am.

Keep us updated...sending lots of hope to you x

  • Hi thank you for your reply and my husband says the same and to stay positive

but its so hard and you naturally think the worst. I am keeping myself busy.

I wish you all the best for the 24th June and hope all is well. I am sorry to hear

about your husband and hope he makes a full recovery.

I will let you know how I get on.

    All the best x

  • Thank you all for your replies. Had my bloods this morning so a weekend of waiting. My 2WW ref is on 26th June. Just trying to keep busy until then and manage the pain as best I can, as I have been doing for several months now.

    Wishing you you all well.

  • Please let me know how you get on aswell.

I know exactly how you feel...but like you I'm trying to keep busy and not think about it too much, but it always pop back into my head. We've just done a 4 mile walk with friends and it was nice not thinking or talkung about it for 4 hours.

    Big hugs

  • Update

following my appointment I was told that it doesn’t appease cancerous on the scan. I’m having surgery to remove it on 19th July. I was given the option to have my ovary removed at the same time however this could cause early menopause. I’ve asked that they evaluate the condition of my ovary once they’re inside and if it’s damaged then to remove it. I’m back in hospital on 15th July for a pre-op. Off work currently as well due to the constant pain & exhaustion (I have hypothyroidism as well) so I’m napping for a good 2hours during the day

any news from you other ladies awaiting appointments?

  • Hi its is good new that its not cancerous and like you mine also appears to be non cancerous.

Its good that they will do an Op to have it removed. My Dr hasn't mentioned removal yet. I had to go for an MRI last week but when I went in I had a panic attack as it was very clausterphobic so I could not go through with it. I felt such a baby but they said lots of people cannot do the MRI so they may do a CT scan instead so am waiting to hear.

I am sorry to hear you are in such pain and that you are hypothyoid as well. I also suspect I have an underactive thyroid but when I had a blood test they said it was normal but have been told the NHS blood test is not conclusive so I will be having a private one done. Did you know that being hypothyroid can cause ovarian cysts?

Anyway I hope your Op goes well and you start to feel better soon.

    God bless.

  • I have ovarian cysts on both overies, l have had scans both ct that found the cysts and mri, then follow up ultrasound on Thursday and consultant appointment was  brought forward to Saturday morning, now booked to have both removed, as there's a complex cyst they see you quickly usually in two weeks. I hope you get an early appt and they are able to tell you what's up and give you a treatment plan.
